I opened my eyes to see about five people wearing masks huddled around me.
"I need a new IV put in her! She's waking up!" one of them yelled. My eyes wandered the room but caught nothing. Everything was just a giant white blur. Not even the faces in front of me were clear. New IV? What were they doing to me? I didn't understand. Yet, even though that thought was buzzing around me, something was missing. Almost as if I was missing something, or someone.
I racked my brain, but I still couldn't figure it out.
"IV here!" one replied. This voice was female, and it sounded familiar. Still, that didn't really matter to me. I couldn't feel anything except the ache in my mind from thinking so hard. Suddenly, it dawned on me. Jarren!!
Something sharp poked into my skin and my arm started to throb. What the heck are they doing!? That was the first thing I felt, and apparently the last. My head started spinning. This seemed to be a recurring instance.
"She's going under again," the first person spoke again. "Good job with that IV Nurse." An IV was what they had put in me. Well that explained why I felt like sleeping for years now. I felt my eyes droop more as my vision went pitch black. I would have thought I was going blind if not for the fact that I was quickly falling into a very tired state.
Sleep, sleep is what you need Destiny. Let it take you, let it take you now. I heard the voice, but I didn't think it came from the masked people considering I couldn't hear anything else but this voice. I knew what it was though. It was the "Voice." I argued with this voice so much that I could name the dang thing! But this time, what it said made sense. Sleep was a good idea. Then I'd be better and be able to see Jarren again.
So, with that in mind, I drifted away and slept.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"But is she okay? You aren't answering my question," a silky voice rang out near me. Jarren!! I thought. It had to be him! I forced my dark eyes open and looked around. Nothing. There wasn't anything around me except some machines. I was surrounded by white. White walls. White curtains. White sheets.
"She will be, but we can't risk anything. So no you can't see her," a female voice replied. I knew that voice. The nurse from the white room before! I'm glad she had such a recognizable voice.
I shifted my weight and managed to sit up. Did I dare speak? Would the nurse get mad at me? I had no idea, but I needed to see my dear Jarren.
"Uhm, excuse me?" I said in a meek voice. Wow, that came out really weak and helpless, I thought. The white quickly disappeared with a rushed rattling sound. Suddenly, a patch of color painted itself around me. I felt my eyes adjusting to the sudden burst of reds, yellows, blues, and greens.
"Yes Hun?" The nurse said sweetly. She was so pretty. Her dark brown eyes complimented her short, night black hair. Although the nurse getup didn't compliment her well. She had a shiny nose piercing and red painted lips. The eyeshadow she wore was dark and thin, although I think that is only half of what she actually wore on a regular basis. Plus, she looked like she was maybe twenty-one; she was short and slim. Honestly, this girl didn't look like she should be a nurse. A tattoo artist or working at the mall somewhere, maybe. Not a nurse though.
"Oh, uhm, why am I still here? I seem fine," I said quietly.
"Oh, you need to stay. You have some severe--"
"Destiny!! You're okay!!" Jarren jumped up, eyes bright, and ran to me. Although, he never made it to me before he fell and started coughing up blood. What the heck had happened to him!?
"Young man!! Get back in your bed!" The nurse ran over to him and put him back in his hospital bed.
"No, I need to get to Destiny!" he complained. He was fighting to see me, again. He must really love me to do all that. Especially to put himself in pain like that. The nurse only called for the janitor and turned back to me.
"You will do nothing of the sort Jarren," she said in an extremely stuck-up tone. I felt my eyes roll. You have got to be kidding me! She is such a.... I stopped myself from thinking any further. I needed to focus on figuring out what had happened to us.
"Miss?" I motioned for the nurse to join me. "What happened? Why are we here?" I asked. I think I sounded a little bit more like a small child then I had meant to. But I really did want to know, so what did it matter?
"Well your friend here was attacked by a rogue vampire," she spit out the 'V' word with disgust. "Damn vampires think they own this world. They always go and feed on the innocent like they have all the rights to do so in the world!" she kept going on and I sunk in my bed. I looked over at Jarren and he gave me a sympathetic smile. The kind of smile that says 'it'll be okay, I promise.' I gave him a smile in return and flashed my fangs at the nurse in a crooked smile.
"You should watch what you say, and who you say that to." Her eyes widened in horror and I think I heard Jarren ask what I was doing, but I wasn't paying attention. All I was doing was getting us out of here.
The lady let out a scream and tried to run but I grabbed her. "No, no. Can't have you telling anyone." I slipped my fangs over her neck and bit down. Regret flowed through me in red iron tasting rivers. The only way we could get out of here was if I killed her, plus I needed the blood. Tears rolled down my face as I finished her off. The blood was delicious, almost good enough to make me forget I hated doing this.
"Destiny!! What are you doing!?" Jarren yelled. I pushed the nurse down and detached all the wires connected to me, from me.
"Saving our butts! Now come on!" I jumped up and ran over to him. I heard nurses and doctors yelling to check out what the 'commotion' in our room was. We had to get out of there.
But how could we when Jarren can't walk!? That posed a problem.
Well, this was definitely not working! I may have just had a delicious meal, but I was not strong enough to carry Jarren easily. But the dang boy couldn't walk, so I was, in turn, screwed.
"Destiny, you don't need to carry me, especially when it is hurting you," Jarren croaked. He was so stubborn. I doubt he wanted me to just drop him here and take off, because he wouldn't be able to follow me; it would also hurt.
"Shut up you big lug! I'm not just gonna leave you here. and you can't walk so I'm going to carry you and you are going to shut up," I responded quickly. He stayed silent. Good, I thought, he isn't arguing. I smiled and ran on. Nurses were running after me, but they couldn't catch me. No one could catch me. That was the curse of being a demon. Actually, maybe this was a good thing.
Speeding forward in bloodstained lunges, I ran through the streaking white halls. Jarren remained silent, a slight fear in his eyes. He was probably terrified of me. Fear cloaked me with its beautiful whispers. I should just give up. I could set Jarren down gently and hold him while authorities surrounded me. I would tell them Jarren had nothing to do with any of this, that I brainwashed him to protect me and kidnapped him for a food source. What makes you think they'd listen? What makes you think he would stay quiet and let you? He is slowing you down child. He is dead weight.
"Shut up!" I screamed. Great, that's what I needed now, Jarren thinking I'm going insane because I'm screaming at the voice in my head. Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath me. White stopped powering past me and revealed the world around me as I hit the ground. Jarren gasped as he flew from my arms. I cried out in pain in harmony with Jarren. We would have been better off just giving up. Maybe I could have saved Jarren.
Pink and blue scrubs raced towards me. Presumably, they wanted to contain me for the feds. Soon I would be right back where I started...Preparing to hang.
