Chase
"Here you are Chase ," my homeroom teacher Mrs Bishop says when she gives me my timetable for the year. I think that this year will be good, I'm taking; Physics, Chemistry, Outdoor Education, English, Maths and I have a study period. 'Not too shabby,' I think to myself while Mrs Bishop gives her usually pep-talk for the start of a new school year, as usual she mentions working hard and trying not to get too stressed out and piling up work loads etc etc. She finishes just as the bell rings and I head to my first class, Physics.
I've always liked physics, it helps me make sense of the world around me and also how my prosthetic leg works. As I was told the teacher is a no nonsense kind of guy which I like, its always good to have a teacher that can keep control of a class and keep everyone's attention. We end up sitting a pop quiz so Mr Brown (the physics teacher) can get an understanding of how much we know when it comes to physics. I finish before everyone else so Mr Brown take in my quiz and marks it, I end up with a perfect score and Mr Brown seems impressed so I guess that this will be a good year.
The morning goes on without a hitch and then it's time for lunch, I try and find a spot where I can sit by myself but of course end up hearing the customary comments of 'freak,' 'loser,' and 'weirdo,' I ignore these comments as best as I can and find a nice spot under a tree. A short while after I have sat down my friend Luke comes and sits with me, we chat about the holidays and how Luke had an awesome time visiting the U.S.A. After a while I notice out of the corner of my eye a large group of people gather around a small figure sitting on the ground, I hear a lot of laughing and rude remarks being made before the group leaves revealing the figure on the ground. I don't recognise who it is at first but then I realise, it's Anabelle Wilson. I met her once last year, she held the door for me when I was still in my wheelchair just after my surgery to remove the mangled mess that was my left leg. I see that those dickheads have tipped her bag upside down and all of her books are on the ground, before I can get up to go and help her she gathers her things and leaves. I wish I could have gone to help her, then I could have talked to her. She looks different this year, She had her hair pulled back in a tight bun and she was wearing long sleeves even though it's summer, who does that?
I hear Luke chuckle a little from beside me, "what are you laughing at man?" I ask him. "You," he replies. "You were looking at her with puppy dog, love struck eyes bro, you are so into her," he says with a smile on his face. Maybe he's right but I am undecided at the moment, I need time to think about it more. I still can't stop thinking about her appearance now though, last year she was different. She wore her hair down and in loose braids to show off her face, she wore dresses and short sleeves all the time. Now she is different, she has her hair pulled back in a harsh bun and she was wearing long sleeves in summer, I can guess why but i am pretty sure she is not that kind of person.
The afternoon flies by and soon it's time to go home, I get on the bus and my thoughts return to Anabelle. I can't stop thinking about her, maybe Luke is right, maybe I do have a crush on her. I decide to message her and see what happens, as Luke says "Go big or go home buddy." Once I arrive home I bypass the kitchen and head straight to my room, I will get something to eat later. I sit down at my desk and do my homework, I hear mum arrive home and a few minutes I see her cheery face appear in my doorway. She asks about my day and I tell her that it was good and that I caught up with Luke and we talked about his time in America. "Oh, your father called today, he wants to see you in the next holidays." Mum tells me, I roll my eyes a bit and mum looks at me, "just think about it," she says and heads out the door to get dinner ready.
Once mum is in the kitchen I message Luke for moral support; - Hey man, I want to message Anabelle but I have no idea what to say. Help me out dude I get a reply almost instantly; - Hey man, good for you! I knew you liked her ;) Just ask her about her day or just say hi. Good luck bro! It's good having Luke as a friend and having his support, he is the only one who has helped me get through this whole missing leg thing. After a bit of debating I decide to go for it; - Hey Anabelle, I saw what happened to you at lunch today and I wish I had stepped in. What they did was not cool, if you ever want someone to sit with let me know. You can sit with me and Luke anytime you want. :) I hope she takes it well, I have never sent a message to a girl before and I am now very nervous. Oh well, as Luke always says; "You never know until you try bro."
