Hilary had been counting down the days till her scholarship exam, there were only two more to go. Hilary and her mum had both decided that a change of wardrobe was needed if she was to take the scholarship. They had both decided on new paddock boots and two more polo shirt's as well as a show outfit. Along with that came the Rilby's tack, a new girth, saddle pad, and blanket. Kate had already ordered the blanket online, so today was purely a 'tack shop day' as Hilary liked to call it.

Hilary and Kate arrived at the small tack shop that, besides for a bakery and grocery, was all that made up Waterfall Gully .Hilary raced inside, she was welcomed by the rough, horsey smell of horse feed and leather. The first item was paddock boots for Hilary, she walked over to select a new pair, her mother had said she'd buy the rest of the items, together they both arrived at the counter at the same time nearly bumping into each other. Laughing, Hilary and her mum paid for the items and left the store.

On the drive home, Hilary looked through the purchased items. Red and blue polo shirts, crisp white show shirt, clean new paddock boots, and a thick leather girth and soft saddle pad for Rilby.

The next day Hilary prepared for the exam, she read all her horse books again, she worked with Rilby on all his paces, and she practiced her riding technique. She had no idea what the examiners would ask her to do so she practiced just about everything.

The next morning, Hilary woke up with butterflies in her stomach. She took a deep breath to calm herself. She looked in the mirror beside her bed, a pale looking girl stared back at her, she looked about 13 and had medium length wavy brown hair and a solemn face with a sprinkling of light brown freckles across her nose.

After breakfast, Hilary got dressed in her new clothes and boots and loaded up Rilby's tack trunk, after hitching up the horse float, she jumped into the car with dad.

The drive seemed to take ages and Hilary looked out the window for any signs of the town of Stanby. After what felt like ages, Hilary finally saw the houses and trees, Sam pulled up in a large car park.

Hilary and her father walked down the stairs together and ended up on the stairs of a large imposing building that had: Stanby Shire Examinations and Scholarship Building
written in large letters on the door. Hilary suddenly felt small, what if she didn't pass and she was stuck with her old way of life again.  She took a few deep breaths and opened the door.
