The hall buzzed with excitement, as Hilary and Emma took their seats on the old, worn wooden benches. A few teachers stood in the aisles gazing with interest at the podium where Miss Smith was standing waiting for silence, a few half-heartedly shushed the students, most were too interested in the announcement, there had never been one in the first term, so near the end. The gaggle of noise abruptly died down at the appearance of the imposing Chelsea Smith, especially because it was an unusual time of year for an announcement.
"Girls," she started ",it is my pleasure to announce something that has never been announced before in the whole history of Fern Creek Academy. "
She paused
"As you know, we often participate in competitions within Australia and pride ourselves at achieving the high standard that is expected of all of you, but there is bigger game out there, and I am not only talking about in this country." she grinned broadly.
Hilary sat on the edge of her seat. What was the principal getting at?
"Oh no, I am talking about. . . . . . . . ."
Everyone held their breath.
"Scotland!!!!!!!"
The eruption was immediate, students started jumping out of their seats, others yelled at the tops of their voices. Even teachers chatted excitedly to each other. Hilary grinned, so they never knew, Miss Smith wanted it to be a surprise for everyone. Hilary looked up at the podium and, as if by chance, the warm brown eyes if Miss Smith landed on hers and the lady smiled, a secret smile, full of adventure.
