Chapter 6: New Heights

The next few weeks passed by in a blur. School, homework, riding Rilby, more school. Hilary almost forgot about her scholarship exams, until about 2 weeks after she'd done them.

Hilary came home one quiet afternoon, and met her mother at the door

"Something arrived today," Kate said mysteriously,"It's on the table."

Hilary was puzzled, what could it be? She walked inside and saw an envelope, lying on the kitchen table. She picked it up, on the front, it said, Fern Creek Academy  in gold embossing and had the famous school's logo on the top left-hand corner: a horse and rider standing together in the middle of a circle. It also had the school motto, Teaching The Riders Of Tomorrow, emblazoned underneath. Hilary's pulse quickened, she now understood. It was what she had waited so long for.

With a beating heart, she tore open the cream colored paper. Inside were two neatly folded forms. Hilary scanned her eyes over the first one, it said:

Dear Miss Grey,

Welcome to FCA.

We are delighted to inform you that you have passed the FCA scholarship exam with a score of 94% in Equine Knowledge, 89% in Maths and English and a score of 97% in the riding Qualifications.

We are delighted to inform you that these are above average and we hope you will do a credit to the school.

You have made it through to your first year at Fern Creek Academy, well done. You will need to bring your own horse and gear. All else will be provided. See more in the Expectations & Requirements form.

Sincerely,

Principal Bethany Smith                                                                                                                                                                 and all the staff at FCA.

Hilary looked, again and again, she couldn't believe her eyes, she ran out of the room

"Mum, Dad, guess what, you won't believe it, I got ACCEPTED, ACCEPTED into Fern Creek Academy!!!"

Sam and Kate smiled,"We knew you'd make it," said Sam, smiling.

"Oh sweetheart, I'm so proud of you," said Kate, she ran up and hugged Hilary so hard that Hilary thought her bones would break.  When Kate finally broke away, Hilary saw that she had tears in her eyes.

To Hilary, it felt surreal, as though she were floating on happiness.

"You know what," said Kate,"I'll make a celebratory dinner for you. Hilary nodded happily, taking it all in. She walked back inside the room and opened up the other form. It said:

Expectations & Requirements

Dear Student,

We are privileged to have you attend FCA, in order to arrive:

* You must have an English, Dressage and Jumping saddle

You must also have a Halter, Lead Rope and English Bridle

* You must have show gear, casual riding gear will be provided.

You must have a horse that suits your height and abilities

You must bring your own toiletries and your horse's own grooming kit

We expect that you will conduct yourself in a manner that is civilised and unobtrusive.

That's all for now.

Hilary grinned, this was going to be fun, she thought. I wonder what the lessons are like, I hope that I make some friends.

"Hilaaaryy," her mums cry brought Hilary down to earth.

"Coming, Mum," said Hilary.

She raced down the hallway to the kitchen. Beautiful smells were wafting in from the kitchen. Hilary sat down, smiling up at her parents

"Mum," she said," I think this is the best day of my life.

At that, she started helping herself to the wonderful array of foods spread out on the table. Chicken, salads, dips, rice, bread, stew, and after they had all eaten came the dessert. A rich dark chocolate layer cake with frothy, creamy, icing and strawberries. When Hilary had finished, her stomach felt as though it would burst. She sat back contentedly.

The next few days went slowly and happily. Rides in the pasture, eating, drawing. It was only after a week that something that Hilary never forgot, happened.
