Prologue

Fate has a funny way of bringing people together. Sometimes, not in the way they would expect.

Take, for instance, the young Prince Levi Vestan. As the second prince of Feudania kingdom, he had more freedom than his older brother and thus was not bound by the rules of decorum, enabling him to mingle with just about anyone of any station.

It was frowned upon naturally. But as he wasn't the Crown Prince, it could be easily overlooked.

This would probably be an opportune time to mention a tradition of Feudanian royalty. All males were given a Virtue Name. A second name that was meant to perhaps influence their character and shape their sense of morality. Normally people only paid attention to the Virtue Name of the Crown Prince but even as a child, Levi practically drew attention to his own:

Charming.

His Godmother had dubbed him so the moment she laid eyes on him after his birth on that bright summer morning.

"He'll be outright charming, this one," she'd said.

And so he had been.

That, and a little troublemaker who could talk his way out of anything.

It just so happened that a royal entourage from a distant kingdom arrived at the palace one wintery day and Prince Levi, who was only twelve at the time, had been meticulously cheating at a game of cards with the gardener and one carriage driver in the stables. His personal servant who had been aware of the prince's whereabouts summoned him immediately and the boy had rushed to meet the guests looking rather unkempt and smelling of horse and cider.

It was then that he met her as he stood on the top of the stairs overlooking the main courtyard with his family. She was a little younger than him, raven hair braided neatly into an intricate updo and a delicate silver tiara like that of his younger sister.

She was introduced as Princess Annie. And because their parents had important business to discuss, and his siblings lessons to attend, he could show her around the palace.

Now, Princess Annora had always been the shy sort. She was the epitome of a sweet princess. Having so much to say but not knowing how or when to say it had rendered her quiet lest she offend anyone. She had come to realise not many people came to appreciate her humour.

Having met Prince Levi "Charming", she wanted to inquire about his unusual name, ask what could be done for fun as winter was her favourite season but she kept her thoughts to herself.

Eventually, the two hit it off by their similar states of boredom and decided to go sledding with the other children by the small hills.

Usually only commoners would be seen enjoying such events but the two royals had a blast together.

As the days went by, they had fallen into a tradition; sledding after breakfast, a short tea break at a nearby bakery that Levi loved, snowball fights with the village children and building snowmen right before heading back to the palace.

It had been Annora's personal guardian Erik that had noted the princess's lovestruck gaze at the young prince everytime they went out together.

She was only ten years old, he would say to himself. Probably just a crush.

Annora and Levi had become relatively close in the weeks of her stay, even gaining notice of her mother, a sly matchmaker.

But alas, all good things had to come to an end. And when it came time for her to go, Levi gave her a hug and shyly dropped a pendant in her hand.

It was of an intricate snowflake with a sapphire gemstone at the centre. A similar shade of blue as her eyes.

Dare she hope he liked her too?

"I'll miss you, Snowbug," he said to her, green eyes glinting with unshed tears.

"Snowbug?" She asked, wrinkling her nose in distaste.

"You like snow... I like scaring you with bugs... it's perfect!"

"That makes no sense!" She scoffed.

"Neither does mathematics," he countered.

She rolled her eyes but smiled nonetheless. He may be clueless but he was still cute.

"I didn't get you anything," she said, remembering the pendant in her hands.

He waved it off. "It's cool. Not like you can forget this face anyway," he grinned and wiggled his eyebrows.

"Moron,"

"That's handsome moron to you, Snowbug,"

And so they parted ways after a brief embrace.

Alas, unfortunate circumstances arose.

Missing his dear friend, Levi resorted to doing none of the traditions they loved as he would always miss her laugh and how her blue eyes sparkled.

As time went by without correspondence, he chose to forget about the blue-eyed princess who loved winter. After all, life went on and he did not need to sulk about because his friend was gone.

So she was erased from his mind as he grew up. As though she had never existed in the first place.

Annora on the other hand was devatstated over having to leave all the fun behind. But her situation got worse as her older brother and heir to the throne had succumbed to a sudden madness which had resulted in injuring the king upon their return.

The prince was sentenced to life imprisonment on Vulcane Island where he would not be a threat to anyone and his title was given to her. When her father showed signs of the strange madness as well a few years later, he retreated to one of their summer estates to be treated in secret.

Before he left the teary eyed sixteen year old Annora, he'd said in a weakened voice:

"Hold down the fort for me, okay princess?"

And she had promised to do so.

One thing should be known about Annora Nevey. When she made a promise. She stuck by it no matter what.

And so when the king had been declared unfit to rule by the council, she had taken over and had been coronated as the queen of Hielor on her seventeenth birthday.

With her mother by her father's side, she only had council members and advisors to guide her. Her faithful guardian Erik always by her side.

She made a promise to hold down the fort and that was exactly what she would do.

Even if it meant becoming the ice queen to do it.

Fate has a funny way of bringing people together. In this case, it has a funny way of reuniting them too.

After all, some people just need a little divine shove in the right direction.
