Its 3:43a.m. and I was wide awake laying on my bedroom floor, contemplating the events from today.
After Christian and Sebastian told me why he had the sudden interest in me, I demanded Christian to drive me back to school.
"I understand that you must be confused Maria, but we would like for you to join us, and become a guardian" Sebastian said firmly. I was sure he saw the look of disbelief on my face. Wait, did he say guardian? "We can explain to you much more if you decide to join us" Sebastian said. "Think of it like this. We are the good guys that fight the bad guys, yet we don't get widespread credit because we are a secret government organization" Once Sebastian said that, I looked to Christian. He was staring at me like he was anticipating my next move. Still. no expression on his face.
"Why me?" I whispered to myself. "There's nothing relatively special about me..." I trailed off.
"Its quite simple Maria, you come from an older lineage of guardians. Your great great grandmother was the last ever known guardian from your lineage. Our senior guardians did not know what happened to her because she just disappeared. But we found out that she did bear children, so we set out to look for her closest kin" Sebastian explained.
"So what? I am a guardian? Guardian of what? What am I guarding?" I asked. This piece of information was surprising to me. I did not know much from my ancestry due to me being Brazilian. I just assumed my ancestry was mixed with everything. You know? Colonial slaves and slave masters...
"You are not a guardian yet, but you will be if you decide to join us." Sebastian said. "We will be giving you until Friday to decide, no more than that" Sebastian said with a final tone. "This is where we will meet if you decide to join us" Sebastian said whilst giving her a plain white card on a table with an address.
Christian was quiet for most of the duration of this strange exchange. I looked at him. I really looked at him. There was no expression whatsoever on his face. His beautiful green eyes were locked on my face, his full lips on a straight line. I noticed how his arms that were on the on the table had protruding veins. Damn he was hot. I trailed my eyes back up to his face. He raised his eyebrows. I suddenly felt heat on my face.
"Just take me back to school" I said.
But he drove me straight home. I didn't even ask him how he knew where I lived. I was too scared to do so. I just got out of his car and ran straight home.
I sighed.
I couldn't stop daydreaming of how life would be like if I joined them. To become what they called a guardian. The fact that someone from my family a long time ago used to be one, makes me inclined to take Sebastian's offer. But what about a normal life? Like going to college, and having a 9 to 5 job. I watched enough movies and TV shows to know that once you are involved with secretive governmental stuff, your life becomes far from normal.
I chuckled to myself. 9 to 5 job thought? That wasn't me. From watching my mum stress over working in the hospital and doing extra hours because of shortage of staff, I knew I wanted to help people too. My mum inspired me to be selfless when it comes to helping others.
With that in mind I fell asleep thinking of green eyes also.

"Maria, Maria, Maria!" I heard in my sleep. "Maria, get up or you will be late for school" I heard my mum say from outside my bedroom door. I groaned as I felt the sunlight on eyes, blurring my vision. "I'm up" I tried to yell, but it probably sounded incoherent.
"Why the fuck did I forget to close the blinds?" I moaned, as I threw the bed covers off me and walked towards the bathroom across my room.
After taking a quick shower and changing into jeans, black top and hoodie, I quickly filled in my eyebrows with brown powder, lightly. I already had full brows, but I liked to make them look fuller. This is the only sort of makeup I did. I don't know why, I just had a slight obsession with eyebrows. As I did this, everything that happened yesterday came to mind. I wonder if Christian will speak to me today? If he does, will Brad and Nicolai speak to me too?
With all of this in mind I took way too long with my eyebrows. When I glanced at the clock, I cursed, I was going to be late for school. So I quickly grabbed my black backpack and headed towards the entrance of my house, grabbed a banana and yelled a goodbye to my mum.
Once I got to school, I had two minutes to walk to my first class, English. When I neared the classroom door, I faltered on my steps. Brad is in my English class. I suddenly felt awkwardness creeping inside me.
Feeling stupid I pinched myself and rolled my eyes. What could go wrong?
As I walked in to the classroom, the bell rang at the same time. At least I got here on time.
Once I sat in my seat, I looked around the classroom and there was no sign of Brad. Weird. But not unusual, I guess he was busy being a government spy or whatever.
As I was about to reach for one of my books from my backpack, I noticed Tara and Sara staring at me from across the classroom, whispering and giggling. What are they whispering about? I felt to reach into my backpack and get my mirror out to check my face, but I didn't. For some reason I didn't care about them.
Yes, I wanted friends. But not friends like Tara and Sara. Funny how their names rhymed. They were ignorant and money was their only source of happiness.
I haven't had friends for so long, that I have learned how to be independent. I just wish I could experience the same adventures as the people from my school. At my old school, my group of friends was truly mixed. People from different ages and backgrounds and we mostly liked different things, but we still bonded. My current school is a different, even stereotypical. The popular ones stick together, and the ones that choose to rigorously study music stick together.
The sound of the bell woke me up from my daydream. I quickly packed my stuff to leave. I could feel Tara and Sara looking at me as they left the classroom. I rolled my eyes. I bet they will start a rumor about me, since they have noticed me. Maybe my eyebrows look extra strong today, and that is what made them notice me. Just maybe.
As I was walking out I couldn't help but stare at Brad's seat and wonder if I will ever see him, Nicolai or Christian again if I refuse to become a so-called guardian.
I walked out to my next class with that in mind.
