Another morning, another hiding my wounds. I checked my face in the mirror and applied a tiny bit of makeup before I brushed my teeth and threw my blonde hair up into a pony tail. I could already tell today would suck, I decided as I quickly got dressed then ran downstairs.
The living room was clear so Dad was probably still upstairs and if it was that meant Mom was still at some random's guys house. I sighed and shook my head, they just weren't made to be parents- I suppose.
I drove to school and sat in the parking lot for a few minutes. I always got to school pretty early. Not out of love for learning, I just wanted to get out of the house. I was applying a little bit more mascara when I saw a tall, dark headed guy that I hadn't seen before walk into the school office. I watched through the large glass window out front while he conversed with the secretary for a few minutes then got bored. I put the rest of the mascara on and unloaded from the car then preceded to haul my back pack out from the truck.
"Hey," I heard someone say suddenly, "Um, I'm new here so I thought I could ask you. Do you know who Amey Briant is?"
"Yeah, " I laughed, "She would be me." I looked up after I got my bag on my back, it was that guy I'd just seem.
"Oh," he smiled suddenly. Up close I could see he was pretty good looking with bright blue eyes and long dark hair, "Well, the secretary in the office said you probably wouldn't mind showing me around and that you were a very nice girl." He winked, "Of course, the secretary is my aunt Sarah and she probably thinks you're as beautiful as I do."
I scoffed and rolled my eyes, "Nice try, Romeo. I don't seduce easy. I would show you around but I'm not going to if you're gonna keep that crap up."
He looked hurt, "I meant what I said. I wouldn't try to seduce you, I'm not that kind of guy. I'd love for you to show me around but I can't entirely promise that I won't ask you out."
I bit my lip, contemplating it all. I could lead him around school and risk him asking me out, but- then again- it's not like he was bad looking, I could go on a date with him.
"Okay," I finally said, "I'll show you around. What classes do you have?"
He handed me his schedule and fell in line behind me like a puppy. We had all of our classes together other than fourth, how ironic.
I informed him of this as I scanned the crowd for Katie and Velma. I saw Katie sitting on some jock's lap across the quad, no doubt working on another heartbreak. Velma was probably sitting out in James' truck, asleep. She was so grouchy in the mornings.
"Wait," I realized something as I turned back to the guy, "You know my name but what's yours?"
"Jude Wilson," he replied, smiling.
"Do you always smile?" I muttered. His happiness was incredibly annoying.
"Usually," he smiled even bigger, "Are you always in this bad of a mood?"
"Usually," I replied.
He rolled his blue eyes, "Cheer up, darlin'." He threw one arm around me, "Now where shall we go first?"
I gave him a stern look and he smiled a smile like that of a child who knew he wouldn't get in trouble.
"So," he said, running a hand through his hair.
"So?" I asked as I walked him to wear his locker was, which was ironically right next to mine. Why in the hell was everything he had so close to mine..I mean, what the fuck? I bet that aunt of his..Aunt Sarah or whatever had fixed it. I was thinking about the ways to kill her when I heard Velma.
"Hey, babe." She laughed as she pulled James behind her by his hand. He wrapped his arms around her waist and lowered his head onto the top of hers.
"Hey," I said.
"Who is th-"
I shook my head no and she quickly became quiet.
"Anyho," she shrugged her shoulders, "Me and James better get going. Bye!"
"Bye," I replied as I turned back around to where Jude was checking his locker out. I grabbed my books for the morning out of mine, loaded them into my bag and then we headed to pass some time. It was only 7:00 and school didn't start until 8:00 so I figured I could get a tour of the whole school in.
"Well," Jude said, "Let's get to know each other. My full name is Jude Michael Wilson. Recently moved here from Florida to live with my aunt Sarah. I love panda bears, gummy worms, and cotton candy. I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. Your turn."
"Okay," I sighed, "Full name is Amey Lynn Bryant. I've lived here all my life. I love icecream, books, and to be left alone."
"Alrighty," he smiled again, "So I was wondering something." He ran his hand through his hair again and bit his lip.
"Yeah?" I asked as we walked and I pointed out all the buildings and what classes were in which one.
"Would you like to go out with me Saturday night?"
"Umm..." I thought, "I don't think I have anything. Today is Friday right?" He nodded, "Yeah, sure."
"Great," he smiled brightly.
We walked around school the rest of that morning until the bell, looking and laughing and for the first time in a long time- I felt happy.
