"Jessie?"
My head snaps up at the familiar sound. She's here. She's back home!
Excitement bubbles up inside me as I jump up, spinning around to face my very much missed twin sister, a massive grin stuck on my face.
"Maggie!" I squeal, my eyes locking with the same green eyes as mine.
"Jessie, you look amazing!" She exclaims, throwing her arms around my neck. Laughter erupts as we hug, thankful to finally see each other after weeks.
"Not as great as you! You're like, glowing" I say, pushing Maggie at arms length. Her hair seems lighter, her cheeks more flushed, her big green eyes shining through those long lashes. She's always been the more beautiful twin.
Grabbing my hands, she pulls me towards the kitchen door and drags me inside, a finger over the lips to keep quiet while her eyes dart towards the door as our parents yap away to someone.
Wait, she brought someone with her?
Shutting the door quietly, she spins around to face me, a smile tugging at her lips as she notices my confusion.
"I have something to tell you" she whispers, her eyes dancing with excitement.
I feel my fall face as thousands of thoughts run through my mind, but I cover it up quickly with a smile to not disappoint her.
"I have a boyfriend. And he's here! You get to meet him today!"
Shock fills me as I stare at my twin sister.
Is that who our parents are talking too? Is she serious with this guy? I mean, she never really keeps them around for longer than 3 weeks and we never meet them because she dumps them. Unlike me who has never actually had a proper boyfriend.
My mind flickers back to the boy I've spent years dreaming about. The boy who stole my heart with just a smile. A familiar ache settles in my chest as I remember how out of league he is. How he'll never think of me as anything more than the twin of Maggie.
"Come and meet him. He's heard loads about you and I'm sure you'll love him" Maggie smiles warmly, and pulls me towards the voices.
"Harvey" she sings, and drags me round the corner til I stop mid track, my mouth hung open.
Several emotions swirl around me as I look into the eyes that stole my heart. The dark hair I've imagined sifting through my fingers has blonde highlights streaking through. The full plump lips that I've dreamed of kissing have a red stain that matches my sisters lipstick. His sharp high cheekbones that I've pictured caressing seem sharper. And then those blue eyes don't shine the way they used too when they stared into mine. My sisters changed him. And I don't like it one bit, even though he still looks devastatingly gorgeous.
The heart that ached for him for years shatters as he pulls the prettier, funnier version of me into his arms, planting a kiss on her head, his hand subtly snaking down to the curve of her bum.
No no no no nononono this can't be happening...but it is. Of course it is. Maggie gets everything she wants, including a certain guy that I know she won't treat as well as he should be treated. But maybe...maybe she will. Maybe this is different.Everybody knows what it's called when you crush likes you back. Yeah, it's called imagination.
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I hold my hand out to him.
"Nice to meet you Harvey" I croak.
An earth shattering smile breaks his face, his spotless teeth shining as his calloused hand engulfs mine in a shake.
If I wasn't on the verge of sobbing my heart out, I would've enjoyed the moment of holding his hand.
"Great to finally meet you too Maggie" he drawls in his deep sexy voice that makes me sigh.
Suddenly his hand slips from mine, and an instant cold and lonely feeling takes over.An hour later and I am so done with today.
I mean, seriously, my sister is dating my crush.
Yes, so she didn't actually know that I like him. How could she when she was never about?! And I never spoke of it because of the embarrassment.
So currently, I'm sitting on the sofa squished between my parents as we listen to how my gorgeous sister and this stunning man became a couple.
Maggies perched on his lap, her arm hooked around his neck, her fingers toying with the ends of his dark hair whilst his thick corded muscular arms wrap around her waist, his long jean clad legs supporting her, their fingers intertwined. Maggies voice drones on but all I can do is watch them. Watch how he smiles at her, they way his eyes shine in a certain way only for her. How he treats her like the princess she's always been. How wrapped around her finger he is. The view in front of me flips my stomach, my smashed heart thumping weakly, straining the broke pieces to dig in causing pain.
"Excuse me" I mumble, as I stand up, dragging my numb body to the kitchen. Sighing, I flop down onto the counter seat, and bury my head in my hands.
Take a deep breath, don't cry. Take a deep breath, don't-
"Maggie?" That voice instantly sends my heart into a frenzie.
Peeking through my fingers, I glance at Harvey, who's leaning against the counter opposite me, his bicep flexing.
"Maggie are you okay?" He asks. Suddenly I realise that I was staring at his bicep, a deep red fills my cheeks, my eyes burning with embarrassment. Shyly, I lift my eyes to meet his, but instead of seeing anger or disgust, his eyes dance with amusement.
"You seem better now" he chuckles, smirking at my pink cheeks.
Oh my.
"I-i'm sorry" I stutter, gulping.
A booming laughter fills the kitchen as he throws his head back, his whole body shaking. Eventually, I find myself laughing along with him, even though I'm not completely sure what we're laughing at exactly. I think it may be me.
The door slams open and my sister appears, glancing curiously between us.
"Seems like you're bonding. What's going on?" She asks.
Harvey gazes at her for a second, before his eyes lock with mine.
"I just find it funny how different you girls are. You both are..refreshing"
My breath hitches as he smiles fondly at me, but the moment is gone as soon as it appeared as Maggie wraps her tanned slim around around his neck, his hands and eyes instantly going back to her.
Whispers and looks pass between them, making my skin crawl. I stand up quietly and walk towards the door. Half way open, I can't help but glance back, but I regret it immediately as his lips connect with hers. Tears fill my eyes as my heart breaks, and I'm reminded in the harshest way possible that me and Harvey will never have anything. That fun moment in the kitchen was just friendly. Nothing more. It shouldn't of made my heart race like it did.
Shutting the door behind me, I lean against it, squeezing my eyes shut, but all I can see in my mind is them kissing.
My sister dating my crush leaves me....crushed.
