With my camera bag swinging round my neck, I trudged down the hill, narrowly avoiding the prickly thorns on both sides of the well-trodden path. I felt a drop of sweat run down my back as the early August sun beat down onto the nape of my neck.
In one swift movement I pulled off my t-shirt and untangled it from the straps of my camera bag and my headphones. I looped the tee trough my bag and continued my trek, squinting when the sun pierced my vision as it darted in between trees.
I pulled my phone from the bag and tapped on the music app. I scrolled through the albums until I found the one I wanted. I pressed shuffle and picked up my pace as the familiar chords and lyrics bursted into my ears.
If I fell with no one around, would it even make a sound? 'Cause I can't even make one now.
And I get these thoughts in my head, but I wouldn't do it anyway. Or at least that's what I say'Til I'm right on the edge
I take a look at the bottom
And I know it will hurt hitting ground but I don't think that I'd mind the fallingWould anyone know?
Is there anyone watching?
I'm getting crazy ideas in my head and I don't think I'm able to stop it.Jump...
(a/n the song is jump by Astrid S)
As the beat dropped after the chorus I broke into a run, skidding and stumbling down the gravel path until I reached a stream, where I launched myself over effortlessly. I continued to sprint until I reached an incline, where I started to walk at a fast pace.
I knew this walk like the back of my hand, and, after Maya's house, this was my favourite escape. Soon the path ran to the right and I broke off to walk through the dense greenery. I spotted the sticks poking up out of the ground that I had placed there years ago and followed them until I reached my sacred place that no one but me knew of, not even Maya. This was my place and I wasn't willing to share it.
I'd found this place years ago when I'd aimlessly ran away from home because of my parents' arguing. I ran and ran until my legs carried me no more. I remember I collapsed in a heap in a soft bush and lay there until I got my breath back. When I finally got up I found myself looking at a small brick archway built into the hill next to me. When I further explored I found that it was a small box that was big enough for two people to sit down in and was just tall enough to stand up in. The hole however was only just big enough for me to slip through so once I was inside no one could see me from the outside. (a/n THIS PLACE IS REAL GUYS!! I found it out on a walk and I really wanted to claim it as mine but I don't live near it so I can't 😭. Continue your reading)
I curled my fingers around the top of the brick and jumped my legs through the hole. Once my legs were in I let go and landed softly inside. I scrambled around in the darkness and finally my fingers found the chord for my battery operated light. The room suddenly became illuminated and I crouched down to sit on the bean bag I had placed in the corner. Over the years I had decorated my little cwtch (a/n the Welsh word for like a snug or a den is cwtch, pronounced as cootch) with lots of trinkets, clippings and photos. I had drilled a slab of wood into the side to form and shelf and the walls were completely covered in scraps of paper. I pulled a can of Carling from my backpack and started sipping on it as my eyes scanned the wall. On my right there were some newspaper clippings. I read one that I had read over and over 'til I knew what it said off by heart.
