After watching the Maze Runner films, me and May decided it was time to leave Matt and Jades apartment. Seen as it was 23:00 May was pretty tired. She always was the first to fall asleep at sleepovers, and normally she would go to bed at 21:00 and wake up at 8:00 in the morning. She savoured her sleep, and if you woke her a minute before her alarm went off, she'd be furious, refusing to get up until we left her for 10 minutes extra.

Maya had her arms folded across her chest, head lolling to the side as we drove over the bumps and curves of the road, thick, deep brown hair still managing to look flawlessly curled after the whole day. Her feet were propped up on the dashboard, looking cosy in her fluffy socks. She seemed to have limitless supplies of those socks and you'd never see her wearing anything inside her shoes other than something that looked like they'd been stripped directly off a sheep, normally wrapped in the extra insulating layer of her precious and massively worn ugg boots.

Her petite figure looked swamped in the passenger seat of my Range Rover and her sleeping face looked peaceful and rosy. She was wrapped in the velvet soft blanket that I always kept in the back seat for her on these long drives home because it was almost guaranteed that she would fall asleep.

"Enjoying the view?"  The words hardly slipped through her shut lips and for a second I doubted she'd even said them until she opened her eyes and threw a smirk at me. That's when I realised I'd been watching her "sleep", which I knew now was a trick.

I tore my eyes away and back onto the road. "I was actually thinking of how peaceful you looked May but now you've ruined it," I chuckled and pouted at her.

"You look like such a baby," she laughed, dragging an arm out of her cocoon and flicking my big bottom lip.

"You're mean. Go back to sleep!" I said, fake glaring at her from the corner of my eye. She giggled and returned her eyes forward to watch the road, the car falling back into silence.

"You know I totally would have been the first to die," she said as if deep in thought.

"What?" What the hell was she talking about?

"In the maze," she stated matter of factly as if it was obvious. I nodded in understanding and she continued. "I mean if I was alone I would definitely die. I can't outrun a snail!"

I laughed, a deep belly laugh that seemed to echo around the car. It was true, Maya couldn't run for her life and came dead last in every cross country competition we had in high school.

"Maybe I would have survived if I was with Thomas though," she grinned from ear to ear. "He is soooooo hot!"

"Shut up May," I said, trying to hold back a grin of my own. Maya saw this weakness and continued.

"I mean his jawline is to die for, you could cut bread with his jawline. And he looks so good muddy," she turned and wagged her finger at me to emphasise her point. "Not many boys can pull that off."

"I would like to remind you," I interject. " I did the mud run last year for charity. Do you not remember that?" I smiled, feeling cocky and proud.

"Let's be honest Alex you could hardly walk at the end of that and was hanging off me all the way home. Definitely not an attractive quality in a boy to depend on a girl so much."

"Well.." I said, reaching my hand up to wipe away a fake tear.

She laughed and then turned to press her forehead to the window, watching the world go by.

"So," I suddenly blurted out, making her eyes whip open and turn to face me in horror.

"Jesus Alex at least give me some warning before you scare the crap out of me!" She yelled, hitting my forearm. "I was nearly asleep and you woke me up!" I laughed as she proved my prior point. Sleep is her favourite thing, even comes above me.

"Anyway as I was going to say, do you have your eye on anyone at the moment?" I say, watching her in my peripheral vision and wiggling my eyebrows suggestively, making her snort a small laugh.

"Well I wouldn't say no to Dylan o-"

"A real person May," I say cutting her off.

She looked at me with fake anger and confusion and said "I'm sorry I didn't realise Dylan O'Brien was a fricking unicorn?!"

"C'mon just answer the question."

Her face suddenly turned serious and she looked down at her blanketed lap where her fingers were twiddling nervously around each other. I'd never seen her that nervous or filled with anticipation. She was always the one to face a situation head first and not worry about the outcome, however whatever she was about to say to me was screwing up her face in concentration.

"Well actually I've been meaning to talk to you about this but I'd never found the right time but seen as we're on the subject and you brought it up I might as well go ahead and tell you what I've been thinking about-"

I cut her off once again, sensing that she was losing control of the words that were coming out of her mouth. "May you're rambling. Get to the point already! You're killing me with the suspense!"

She forced a fake smile at my comment, tucking her fluffy legs up to her chin.

"The point is...see the thing is...well," I raise my eyebrows at the way she spoke and gestured with my hand for her to continue.

"Okay," she said, as if trying to encourage herself. "The point is..." she sucked in a deep breath. "..its you. It's always been you Alex."

I turned round in shock, my jaw hanging slack as I stared into her eyes and saw complete truth. Oh my god she's not kidding! She held my eye contact, the cringe obvious in her scrunched up eyes and tense body language.

For a second she looked away at the road and closed her eyes. When she turned back she was looking at her lap again and one solitary tear was running down her cheek.

"I knew I shouldn't have told you. It was stupid anyway," she confessed, swivelling back round in her seat and placing her legs back up on the dashboard.

Taking my hand off the steering wheel I reached over and brushed the tear off her face with the pad of my thumb. I couldn't stand to see her cry, I never could, because it always reminded me that even the strongest people aren't strong enough for their own minds. She was always strong for me, her big heart filling the gap that was left when my mother took away mine.

When my hand touched her face, she looked back up at me, her big auburn eyes sparkling in the moonlight, damp and tired. We just looked at each other for a while, my hand still cupping her cheek.

And that's where it stayed. That's where it was when I missed the traffic lights and my car careered into the crossroad. That's were it was when the truck came speeding towards us. That's where it was when I noticed the headlights in the window behind Maya's head and even as I screamed, that's where my hand remained, keeping her strong like she had all those years. But I guess in the end my strength wasn't enough to save her as suddenly my mind was full of metal, blood and finally darkness.
