Chapter One

The smell of the forest after a rain is always so…invigorating. The leaves rustled, and from here, you could hear the gentle rush of water in the stream below. Usually I go and do a bit of running in the mornings, but today’s too beautiful to waste.

The sun was slowly rising over the horizon…it was beautiful. No, it was more than that. It was so magnificent. I sat there, curled up, soaking in the Sun’s first few rays. “Hey, it’s time to go!”  a familiar voice called out. I scowled, but said nothing. I slowly got up and stretched a little. “Fine,” I mumbled, grabbing my bag.

Amanda gave me a scowl, as I did to her. I didn’t like her, and she didn’t like me, simple as that. I hated her. Why? She was an asshole who got my brother killed. And I couldn’t do anything about it.

We exchanged no words, much to the displeasure of the other adults there. I took a deep breath and began to run. I enjoyed running, because it gave me so much freedom, you know? The feel of the wet ground, the smell of the trees, the sound of the water rushing downstream, it was just so carefree.

I continued at my fast speed, too angry to care about Amanda. She was always super slow. I came to a stop at the mountain, quickly morphing. I gave myself a small nod and started walking down the hill, to the school.

How we became like that I never understood. However, according to legend, there were a lot of immortals up there in heaven. So get this. Even immortals commit crimes. These ‘bad’ immortals were usually locked up in prison. But then, one day, a girl and a guy, Jasper and Emily Unique, were banished to Earth because they tried to run away together. And in heaven, nobody elopes.

There was a pair of dead unicorns lying in the bushes where they were wandering, and they entered the unicorn. But because they were immortals, they were able to morph in between human and unicorn. That’s how we were created. So my real name was Jamie Unique, but to everyone else, I’m Jamie Dawson Cole.

No one can find out about our secret, because these “Uniques” are few and far between. Our whole herd congregates in North Creek Woods, but Uniques usually traveled alone, or in pairs. Everyone knows how bad things can get if anyone finds out.

You see, the things about us Uniques, is that we have special blood. Our blood, if drunk constantly, will ensure you a life where you would never die. However, the only way you can drink a Unique’s blood is if you kill it, and it’s very easy to kill a Unique, if you knew how.

All you have to do was attack our legs. The only thing that makes us so hard to kill is because we’re so fast, you can’t ever get near to us. Last year, Amanda screwed up big time. She fell in love, big pile of crap to me, and that guy was cheating her all along, because she accidentally let up that her name was Amanda Unique.

My brother, Noah, went after her that day after he realized she had given away the secret, but it was a ambush. To save Amanda, Noah sacrificed himself. Of course, I eventually got hold of the man and killed him, but my brother was dead. All because of Amanda.

“Jamie!” someone called. I blinked rapidly and focused. “Quinn, hi,” I greeted, smiling. “I’ve been calling you like 3 times!” Quinn snapped. I frowned. “Sorry,” I apologized, bringing her close to me and kissing her forehead. She smiled slightly and I knew I was forgiven. She was the cutest girl ever. She was also my girlfriend, which was sweet. We were the ‘it’ couple in high school, because Quinn was the kindest girl ever, but excelled in cheerleading, while I was quarterback of the football team.
