I reached camp an hour after the sun rose.

Lucy and her family were still fast asleep, so I decided to go down to the river and get us some breakfast. I caught a few fish and started a fire in the clearing, using wooden sticks to create a little “grill”. The fish sizzled nicely and just as they awoke, the fish was cooked.

“Wow, these are real good. So fresh, where did you get them?” Ryan asked, reaching for seconds. “Down by the river, some of salmon just laid their eggs and were dying, so I decided to grab them since they were going to die anyway,” I shrugged.

Lucy looked at me, and mouthed, “Meet you at the spot.”

After breakfast, I put out the fire and met Lucy at the same spot. “You wanted to speak to me?” I asked, taking a seat. “Yes…” she said quietly. “Look, I already said, forget about yesterday okay?” I said louder than usual, with a slight hint of bitterness.

“It isn’t about yesterday!” she quickly rebutted.

“Oh, sorry, please continue,” I said quietly. “I think you should get a job in mainland, like the rest of us,” she said quickly. I nodded. “Of course. I shall go and look for a job today,” I said slowly. “I don’t know what happened in your past, but right now, you have to start afresh, and that includes getting a life. I have a job opening at my company, mostly doing admin work, but it’s a start,” she said quietly.

“Okay, thanks. When’s the interview then?” I asked. “It’s later this afternoon, I already had it applied for you. Anyway, I really wanted to say it’s sweet of you to catch the salmon,” she said, grinning. “Oh, that was nothing. I felt bad that Ryan had to fly to the city to get us food every time,” I mumbled.

“No, I meant it was really nice of you to catch the salmon because they were going to die. You could have caught any fish but you specifically chose salmon because they didn’t have a future,” Lucy said, smiling. “You’re a sweet guy, really,” she ended, grinning. “Are you waiting for me to ask you out?” I asked, laughing.

She stood up and shrugged. “Maybe,” she said quickly, giving me a small wink.

“Come on, we need to get you some proper clothes,” she said, tugging me along. I sighed exaggeratedly and we morphed together, flying into the city of Vancouver.

I liked flying. It gave me some time to think. Was I ready to go on a date with Lucy? I knew she liked me, and I liked her too, but as a sister, not really as a lover. I guess feelings can be cultivated over time, but still, I wouldn’t fully love her, and was that right for her to sacrifice everything for me and yet if the day came when I had to pick a choice, I would still betray her?

Either way I would be breaking her heart, the only difference was sooner than later.

But this was the life I was meant to have, with a Unique. I knew we had to force imprint, but this was the way my life was supposed to be. And if Quinn had already begun to let go, why hadn’t I done the same?

We landed smoothly and morphed into our human form. Lucy spent the next hour picking out shirts and suits for me. Finally, she decided on a black shirt with a red tie and a suit. I had to say, I looked pretty good when I put them on.

I breezed past the interview and was pretty confident that I was getting the job. I was hanging outside Lucy’s office, waiting for her to knock off when the ice cream truck came driving by. I got us two chocolate ice creams, even though I wasn’t actually sure whether she liked them. I carried them up to her office and handed it to her, leaning against her table, feeling her colleagues staring at me.
