My body was beginning to grow tired as I finished up my shift. The night had been incredibly long and my limbs were aching from being on my feet for four hours straight. I wanted nothing more than to take a warm shower and collapse into bed to sleep tomorrow away.
I grabbed my water bottle from the side of the stage and took a swig as I headed to my dressing room. I changed from my skimpy outfit to the warmer one I had arrived in and waved goodbye to my team mates as I quickly exited the room.
"Carmen! Wait!" I heard a voice call from behind me. When I turned, I met Leslie's blue eyes and smiled.
"Hey, Leslie."
"I have some really good news. I wanted to wait to tell you until I knew for sure, but...I just cant!" she grinned.
"Well tell me!" I urged, my own smile growing.
"Do you remember that guy I started seeing about four months ago?" she asked. Truthfully, I didn't. A pang of guilt went through me when I thought of how Leslie had take me under her wing and become my only friend. I barely even made an effort to keep up with her.
"Yeah, what was his name again?"
"Damien." she told me. "Anyways, things have been getting serious, I told him about my job, where I live, and how I got here. He totally understood, so two nights ago he took me out to dinner. We talked and at the end of the dinner he asked me to move in with him!"
"That's great Leslie!" I shouted, pulling her into a hug.
"I know!" she giggled, breathily, squeezing me. "I'm so happy."
"When are you moving?" I released her, but I kept one of her hands in mine. I loved to see her so radiant, she deserved it.
"Probably by Friday!" she squealed, fanning her face. "God, I'm sorry, I'm just so happy!"
"I'm glad," I smiled, hugging her again. "I'd love to hear more but I am just so tired. Will you tell me all about it tomorrow?"
"Yes, go!" she told me, her face still incredibly bright. "Bye, Carmen."
I waved at her and walked down the short flight of steps to the main floor. I waved goodbye to the girls working the bar and headed out the back door. The wind was harsh, and I was glad that I had worn a thick jacket. I shoved my hands into the pockets as I walked to the front of the building, where the sidewalk was. I could see there was still a heavy stream of people entering the club and another wave of relief flooded me.
Ahead there was a lone car parked at the curb of the street, away from the clubs parking. It was in the direction of my apartment and as I drew closer, I recognized the vehicle.
"Harry?" I asked, when I saw him leaning against the hood of his car. His head snapped up and he stood straight, giving me a brilliant smile. "What are you doing here? How long have you been out here?"
"Hello Carmen." He stopped in front of me. My heart rate increased as he tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, letting his fingers linger. His touch was surprisingly warm against my cheek. "I've been waiting for you."
"Waiting for me?" I asked, confused. "Why?"
"To say goodbye." he sighed, retracting his hand. "I'm leaving tonight."
"Where are you going?"
"Away." he smiled, partially.
"Why?" My heart was a little heavy. Harry had already been gone for a week, who knew how long he'd be gone this time. Who knew I even cared.
"For you." he whispered, staring at me intensely.
"Me?" I was shocked. I was expecting him to give me another vague answer, not that he was leaving town because of me. "Why me?"
"It's hard to understand." he frowned, running a hand through his messy hair.
"How long will you be gone?" I asked, deciding not to push him. I knew from experience I wouldn't get a very good answer anyway.
"I'm not sure. But I'll come back." his smile returned. "For you."
I nodded, silently, ignoring the flutter of my stomach. "Goodbye then, Harry." I cracked a half smile, and waited for him to say goodbye aswell. But he didn't. He grabbed my hand and tugged me closer, hesitating before leaning down and kissing me.
My body froze up as his warm lips worked against mine, trying to evict a response. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know what I WANTED to do. My head was telling me to stop, to push him off, but my mind was growing fuzzy as Harry held me in his arms, and against my better judgement, my body began to react to his. A fire fanned out underneath my skin, and my mind was struggling to recapture control, but it was losing that battle. My lips finally began to move with Harrys, and he smiled against my lips. His fingers gripped at my waist, feeding the flames threatening to engulf me. Too soon though, he pulled away, and the fire blew out, leaving me cold.
"Goodbye, Carmen." he mumbled, kissing my forehead before walking away. He climbed into his car and with one last searing glance, he drove off, leaving me alone, undecided, and unsure.
