Action, action, and more action.
There are many angles to write action and it can change with the genre and point of view. Today the focus is general tips for writing action scenes with third person point of view.
It all starts with your main character. What is he/she trying to do? What's the goal? Is it really necessary?
If your answer is yes to the last question then continue.
Remember credibility is vital. If your main character is the average girl next door then it won't make sense to go on a killer week.
Cut all the unnecessary details. The reader only wants to read so much. This isn't the time to explain the beginning of the universe. Keep it simple. Don't overwrite. No one has time for that, not even you. Distracting details will slay the scene/mood.
No confusing jargon, it makes no sense to throw a word no one understands.
No speeches.
And never switch from what your character is seeing, feeling, or thinking to the viewpoint, emotions, or thoughts of another person. That will make you look like a real amateur.
As humans, we have multiple senses. We also hear, smell, taste, and touch. To enhance your description, in a good way, use those senses.
But too much attention on pain weakens the tension. Things are happening, people are running for their lives and that means no time for complaining. Have your deadline marked. Consequences need to be there. If not, what's the point of writing action scenes?
Structure, plot, pacing, characterization, dialogue, storytelling and writing style will also play a part. Don't make any sudden changes because it will cut the action scene in half.
Don't rush it.
Don't force it.
