“War is a three letter word that has frightened many.”
“Elizabeth, I swear I will be fine!” Anthony said as I pestered him.
“No Anthony! I am coming with you!” I said.
“No, War is no place for a woman, unless you’re a nurse.” Anthony said. I got an idea; Anthony looked at me and then looked away, shaked his head and looked back only to see the thoughtful look on my face. “Oh no! Do not even think of being a nurse!” My smile dropped.
“Anthony I’m not letting you go into war alone! It would worry me to much! I’m not being the good wife who sits at home waiting for the chef to come to her door and tell her, her husband is dead!” I cried at him. Anthony put his hands on my shoulders and forced me to look into his eyes.
“I will be safe, and the chef will not come to the door, I swear my love.” Anthony told me. I looked away from him, not being able to bear the thought of not seeing him again.
“You can never predict the future, and neither can you stop it from happening.” I mumbled. Anthony shook his head.
“I have to go now, the cab is waiting, I promise. No war can stop me from coming home to you.” Anthony said. He hugged me and kissed my cheek. I’m glad he didn’t kiss my lips; it just would have made me think it was the last. I held onto his hand until I had to let it go. Anthony gave me one last look and then went into the cab. I waved as the car pulled out of the drive way and left... I slammed the door then, I was upset, mad. I couldn’t just stay in this house! It reminded me of him, he was written all over it. I picked up the phone and dialled the one person I knew would help me.
“Hello?” Rose asked.
“Oh Rosie.” I said. She knew then something was wrong.
“What’s the matter Elizabeth?” Rose asked. I coiled the phone cord around my finger.
“Anthony’s just left for the war.” I said.
“Oh Elizabeth, you’ll be fine, he will to. I bet Smithy’s right by his side.” Rose comforted me. Smithy was her husband, well his name wasn’t really Smithy it was Gram but we all called him Smithy.
“No Rose, I can’t stand to sit in this house and wait. I have to enrol.” I said. Rose gasped.
“But you can’t! You don’t have any training not to mention you haven’t even flown before!” Rose cried.
“I have to Rose; it’s the only way...” I said.
“Well I’m not letting you do this alone. I’ll call Greg and he can give us a lift to the Enrolment place.” Rose said, there was a frantic tone in her voice. I closed my eyes.
