Alex went right to work trying to find the missing ocean. He scanned the horizon, spotting where the ocean had previously been, a giant dip in the sand. He moved towards it, sand kicking up behind his heels. Amy followed after him.

"Um, isn't an ocean a little bit...big? You know, to just disappear and all."

Alex nodded in the direction of the dip. "It would appear so at first, however..." he traced his finger over a dark spot in the sand, "Appearances can be deceiving."

Amy frowned at the barely visible blur. "I must need glasses, because I can't see that at all."

Alex sighed and poked her between the eyes, "Your vision is fine. Mine just happens to be a little bit better." He moved towards the dip. "Come along, I will show you close up."

Amy trailed after him, the heat beating down on her nerves. "Why thank you so very very much, kind sir! Without your superior vision, where ever would we be?"

He glanced back at her through the corner of his eye. "What was that?"

She drew her lips together and looked at a rock near her big toe. "N-Nothing..."

Alex shot her with a friendly smile. "My hearing is just as good as my vision, you know."

Amy felt her face heat up from embarrassment. "Sorry...I shouldn't have gotten so annoyed at you."

"Ah, don't worry about it. Heat seems to affect humans in that way. In fact, on Earth the number of violent murders or crimes goes up during the summer season, probably due to the heat." He continued calmly, as if he was merely discussing the weather.

"Okay, how did you know that? I'm from Earth and I'd never heard that before!"

They reached the dip.

"I'll tell you later, right now we have to focus on the current problem." Alex nealed down in the sand, examining it. Amy sat down next to him, wondering what exactly it was that he saw. Suddenly he shot out his arm and pointed. "There."

"What?"

Alex smiled patiently. "Do you see how that spot in the sand is a little bit damp?"

She nodded. "Yeah. So?"

"So," he drew out the syllable, "doesn't that hint that the ocean disappeared little by little instead of all at once?"

Amy nodded. "That makes sense, but it still doesn't answer where it went." she gave him a stern look. "Don't act so proud, your job isn't over yet, Sherlock."

Alex stood and brushed the sand off the knees of his pants. "Ah, but this is merely elementary, my dear Watson." he smiled slightly, not taking his eyes away from the sand . "The fun part is just about to begin."
