Give A Damn

When I woke up, the sun was just starting to rise. My stomach let out a low rumble in need for food. Sam and Colin were both sound asleep on either side of me, with Colin's head laying on my shoulders. I slowly backed up, to go hunt without waking them up. My shoulders lifted and Colin's head fell onto mine, to which I then slowly slid to the ground. I caught the scent of a deer, fresh enough to track down within an hour. I changed into my human form and started following the scent. I was calmed by the falling leaves that stayed on the trees for so long. The sounds of crunching leaves was soothing, until there was an extra set of crunching that was not of my feet.

I whipped around, changing to wolf and baring my teeth at the pair of blue eyes facing me. I shifted back and glared at Colin. He threw his hands up in surrender, "Sorry, I just, woke up and saw you leaving, so I followed you."

"Well, that is not something you should do to someone who has just been shot" I replied.

"You were shot three months ago. That's not very recent if you ask me," he said.

"Well if you ask me, I was in a coma or whatever you wanna call it for three months, and it didn't seem too long ago for me, smartass." I retorted.

"Alright," he leaned in, "just so you know, I like my girls feisty."

I playfully punched his arm. We continued on the scent trail, talking and joking around. He was a major flirt, but it fit him. We talked about the things they had done for the three months that I was unconscious.

---

We took the deer down a matter of minutes later. "Nice kill," he gave me a wink, "I didn't know you were a good hunter."

"Don't judge a book by it's cover, Colin." I teased.

He smiled. "the cover looks more enticing than the smart of the book."

"You sly son of a bitch." I smiled, playfully punching his arm,

We started to drag the deer back to the den, and that's when I really noticed his build. His shoulders were broad and he carried them well. His muscles were nicely put on display in his blue short sleeve tee. His eyes focused on the deer as he firmly grabbed the antlers for a better grip. He noticed I was staring and I focused my attention onto the ground ahead.

"Checking me out?" He asked with a smirk on his face.

"I- uh- no. I-I was not." I stuttered. He just looked at his feet and shook his head with a smile on his face.

I kept walking, ignoring his stare. I then tripped on an uplifted root and my hair got caught on a branch as I fell. Ignoring the mess of my hair and my half-untucked shirt, I continued walking towards the den.

When we got back to the den, Sam was already awake, tending to the fire. He smiled seeing the 12 point buck we were pulling into the clearing. "I've been smelling that a mile away. I've been wondering where you guys were for almost an hour, but it seems you guys had a little fun along the way," he raised his eyebrows suggestively.

My eyes widened in surprise, realizing hat he meant. "Wha- no! I fell into a tree! Why would I hook up with a guy I've known for less than a week?"

Colin was enjoying the situation too much and slipped his hand around my waist and said, "C'mon sweetheart, I've known you for more than three months and I bang 'em by the third week."

I pulled away from him, cheeks reddening from our closeness and the embarrassment.

"You look pretty abashed hun. From the the tomatoey color on your face and your fashion, it seems someone a-bashed you." Sam smirked, internally high-fiving himself for his joke.

My temper was running short with these boys. "Dammit, I didn't do anything with Colin, so if you would shut your trap, that'd be nice." I snapped. "Okay" Sam said, a submissive tone in his voice.

"Okay, now that the fun's over, can we get this buck going? I'm famished" Colin whined.

------

By the time night had fallen, Colin was already sound asleep in the den, reclaiming his bed. I wasn't tired enough to sleep, but I didn't have enough energy to go on a walk. I lay on the ground in the middle of the clearing and watched the stars as they slowly appeared one by one while the sky got darker. I was so deep in thought that I almost didn't notice when Sam took a seat beside me

"Do you mind?" He asked before settling any further.

"Not really" I emotionlessly told him. He flattened against the ground, I realized that we were closer than I had thought.

"I know the whole situation that we're in is strange, but soon we'll all be back to normal again." He said.

"I hope so." I said flatly, not wanting to converse any more than I needed to. He understood my hint and a silence between us fell.

"Why aren't you living in the city where you could have a normal life?"I pried.

"I can ask you the same question" He replied. I felt the space between us grow warmer as we continued to lay there.

"I tried to have a normal life once, and it didn't go too well," I turned my head to look at him, "how about you?" Not wanting to remember my previous life, I didn't go into detail.

"We grew up this way, learning to raise ourselves after we were ostracized by our pack when we were adolescent pups." He said with an aloof look on his face.

"I'm sorry." I said, scanning his face for emotion.

"For what? We're over it now. Besides, If we hadn't been kicked out, we wouldn't have met you and you'd be dead."

We spent a long time talking about his life in the pack. When he asked me the question that I was pained to talk about "Did you ever have a pack?"

I sat in silence for a moment, thinking about what I was going to say. "Yes," I sighed, "I was a co-alpha with my best friend."

His face softened. Then, he asked me the question that I dreaded even more than the first. "Did you have a mate?"

"Yeah. His name was Parker. We decided it wouldn't work though and now were through." I said with a pained expression.

His eyes that were a bright gold slipped into a vibrant emerald. I gasped at the transformation. It was rare that shifters had the ability to change their eye color. The boy's parents' eyes mush have been amazing because Sam and Colin had breathtaking eyes. My attention focused back and I noticed that Sam's eyes were looking deeply into mine. We sat there for a long time, staring into each others' eyes.

Our silence was broken when he asked me, "When are you going home?"

"I don't know. In a couple of days" I told him. I gout no response. His eyes scanned my face and paused at my lips. He ran his fingers through his hair. His

Cold air breezed by and I shivered. Sam shifted his body enough to envelope me into his arms. I let my head lay on his chest and his scent fill my nostrils. He smelled of pine and fresh soil. He was warm, like a personal heater. Our breathing was at the same pace, but his heart heart was beating at a slightly quicker pace than it normally should. I missed this feeling. Having arms wrapped around me and being awake enough to know what was happening, but too tired to talk. The silence between us wasn't awkward, but comforting. The only sound that we could hear was the trees rustling in the wind and the scurrying of small animals among the leaves. I couldn't tell you who fell asleep first, because I don't remember falling asleep.

How did you like this chapter? It was longer than the others, but I want to keep my chapters at an average-long length.

Anyways, did you like the ending? Who do you like better as a couple? Calla and Colin, or Calla and Sam? What do you think Calla's past was like? Who was Parker and what ended their relationship?
