Phase 2

The hum of crickets fills the air as the sun drifts down, waiting for the moonlight to guide us. The calm before the storm. It's in these moments that we treasure the most, the peace, the quiet. But it's never really peace, it's just an illusion for what is actually happening. The build-up of tension, until it explodes, either in fireworks or explosions. One is beautiful and the other is terrifying, but they both have fire, they both have the possibility for destruction. Ones is just more obvious than the other.

We wait.

I may be Lieutenant Junior, but the Captain is the one who will lead this operation, I'm just third in command. The enemy is situated in and around a tent, which would be their base, in the middle of one of the cattle fields. Its large property and hillside landscape, allows for protection against any suspecting eyes. My guess is they have been here for a couple of months, by the look of the set up. This is probably where all those men came from when they attacked us three weeks ago.

There are two lookout posts on opposite corners of the base. It also appears that they have snipers, just as we predicted. We will have to take that down fast. With thirty or so ground troops surrounding the base and two tanks ready for use, we are going to have to be swift and stealthy.

Glancing at the technician Rodney, I check if he's ready for his mission. His camo uniform we gave him is too big for him, but he doesn't have a much muscle. Beads of sweat roll down his forehead, he's nervous and so he should be. With no military training, he has to rely on us to watch him, whilst keeping focused on his own mission.

I'm leading the third platoon - the whole reason for this mission. Captain Randall gestures for P1 & P2 to start phase one, destruct and distract. It's in this moment that the storm starts, light flickers, illuminating the sky, then the loud crash of thunder. The tanks fire shells at the lookouts and enemy tanks, soldiers fire at one another, shooting round after round.

Chaos erupts. You're forced to act on pure adrenaline, as without it you would be left in shock at what is occurring. Captain Randall then signals my platoon to head out.

"Are you guys ready?" I ask, scanning my platoon, they all nod and begin to sneak out for our hiding positions, towards the base. Hopefully everyone who was inside the base isn't anymore. Making our way up to their makeshift base, we cut through the material, creating our own entrance and exit. It may have looked like an ordinary and large tent from the outside, but inside you can tell that this is indeed a military base. A table stands in the middle of the main room, with a large map of this land, sitting on top. Figurines stand, indicating a battle plan; it might be a good idea to take note of this. In the corner is where the computer and communicators are located - that is what we are here for.

"Rodney," I point to where the setup is, turning his head he spots what I'm pointing to, understanding his job, "Work fast. We don't have a lot of time," nodding, Rodney hastily takes a seat at the desk where the computers are located and begins to type in some key strokes.

Glancing around the room again, I check to see if I missed anything important upon entry. No one seems to be inside this room, but there are other rooms inside as well.

"Stephens, MacKay, Donald, check the two rooms on the left, if you find anything, let me know. Parker and Finn, you're with me, we'll check the rooms on the right. Jones and Haynes stay with Rodney."

We separate and Parker, Finn and I unzip the first door. I presume the room would only be the living quarters for the Captain leading this brigade. Holding my gun up positioned for fire, I glance around the room before taking slow, decisive steps inside. Just as I had assumed the room only contained a bed, nightstand and desk with papers in a disarray. It seems as though this person left in a rush, probably when they heard the explosion and gun fire going off outside.
