Phase One

Half the troop was injured with three deaths. It was bound to happen, but of all those deaths Ryan's hits me the hardest. I just lost my childhood friend, the person who knew me the best. Those bastards stole him from me. I get it, we are in the midst of a war, but he shouldn't have died so soon. So young.

I hated having to leave Ryan's body there, but if we stayed any longer we might not have gotten out. They sent some men yesterday to retrieve the bodies - I couldn't go. I've been focusing my attention to enemy troops seen on the outskirt of the farms, on the northern end. I let down my Lieutenant and comrades the other day. I could have killed them if I didn't leave Ryan's body when I did. I promise to never let them down again.

Walking around the compound, I locate Lieutenant Mitchell. I need him for phase one - convincing the leaders for an attack against the other side.

"Lieutenant Mitchell!" I call out to him as he walks bye. Lieutenant Mitchell is one of the higher ranking soldiers in the military. I'm just a sergeant and because I don't have a high enough position in the military, I can't put forth my plans to the council. That is why I need him on my side, because Ryan and everyone who died deserve vengeance.

I need him, to ensure my plan for revenge and takeover, starting with the general of the other side's head. He is the one I need to get revenge on them for not only killing Ryan and my fellow comrades, but also hurting everyone here and letting the war continue.

"Yes, Evans? What do you need?" His no nonsense tone, makes me want to cower in his presence, as he radiates authority. He is not a man to mess with, especially with his broad shoulders, hard eyes and permanent scowl fixed on his face. He could take me down in seconds and he knows it.

"The recent attack on our troops has brought a few things to my attention. We are letting the other side take ground. We need to go on the offense instead of defence. We can't let them think they can walk all over us."

"So what? You purpose we launch an attack on the other side? What if we lose men? We are already short enough in numbers as it is, we don't need to lose anymore. It's not like we can just walk in and kill them, it takes time and planning."

"I've already got that sorted, Sir. The troops seen on the northern end are threatening our city. This means they must have set up base in someone's land. If we are able to take over that base we can infiltrate their communication devices. With this we can find out their weaknesses within their defence. We can hit them hard and finally win this war."

He stares at me intensely, considering my attack plan.

"Okay Evans. I like the way you think. If you're lucky, I'll put your proposal forth to the council," biting the inside of my cheek, I suppress the urge to break down in a happy dance, "Don't' keep your hopes up, kid." With one last intimidating glare, he turns on his heel leaving me to think over my plan for revenge.

Now that phase one is complete, all I have to do is wait for the next phase to begin. Infiltration. They need to pay for taking Ryan's life and it can only end with the death of the general from the other side. Although he might not have been the one to pull the trigger, he was the one who let his troops out there to ambush us. It was his plan and therefore his fault. And I won't stop until I have his bloody carcass in my arms.

The key to not being a depressed piece of shit is distraction. If I keep myself distracted for long enough, I'll forget what happened. Although it's remembering what happened that's driving my revenge towards the general.

Lieutenant Mitchell had presented my plan for attack to the council. They had agreed that we couldn't let them go unpunished. They loved the idea and let me be a part of the planning process as well as promoting me to Lieutenant Junior, which is a great honour. Although, that's never what I intended, I just wanted revenge and my proposal was a way to get it. They don't know this, but they don't need to. We both get what we want, being upgraded to Lieutenant was just a bonus.

I take a deep breath, as I glance over my appearance again. My dark hair is cropped close to my skull, for functionality, dark circles collect under my brown eyes. My military uniform consists of a green camo jacket, pants and cap, covering my tanned skin, even though it's thirty degrees outside. Soldiers are taught to cope with any type of weather, to stretch your limits.

Sighing, I slip on my combat boots. Better now than never. Taking a shaky breath, I make my way out to the other soldiers. Being Lieutenant Junior is a big deal, this would make me one of the youngest Lieutenants at only twenty-three. Standing in front of my troop, I present the plan to them.

"I will split you into three different platoons, consisting of 15 to 30 men and women. P1 will consist of tanks and heavy machinery coming in from the south-east. Your mission will be to remove any threatening weapons they possess. This way we are not only protecting the produces, destroying their weapons will mean they will have to get new ones, which means returning to the other side and leaving us alone temporarily. P2, you will be the decoy. Your goal is to distract them as much as you can and also to help P1. You will be the largest group, coming from south-west, so just try and blow up as many enemies as you can. And P3, you will be the whole point of this mission. If you fail, we would have wasted all our resources. Don't let that happen," my eyes scan over the crowd, eyeing them with a fixed glare, so they understand the importance of this mission.

"You will being coming from the north-east, containing only a selected few. You will also have a technician with you, to hack into their system. Your goal is to protect and also dispose of any witnesses. We can't let them know that we are tapping into their system. Two will stand guard outside the tent and another two will be located further, out of sight. They will be an added lookout for those blind spots. You will all have communication devices, so please use them. For the rest of P3, stay alert, we don't want to bring their attention back towards the tent. Any questions?"

They all shake their heads, understanding the task at hand.

"Good, now get ready!" I know I've gained their respect, as they follow my orders without question. This is what being a lieutenant is about, respect and order.
