Three cats sat under the shade of a tree in a tight circle. Each of their pelts were dotted with stars and they glimmered when the sun caught their fur. A rust-red she-cat, who had the faint scent of pine on her pelt, looked up, anger radiating off her in waves.
"Are you sure?!" She asked, green eyes wide with fury. A black tom looked up at her, nodding his head. The other cat, a white she-cat, showed no sign of hearing her and continued to look at the ground beneath her paws.
The red she-cat bristled and raced away into the forest, leaving a gap in the circle. Finally looking up, the white she-cat narrowed her eyes. "I don't know why you told her. She deserves to know, but it was obvious she would react this way," she grumbled, lashing her tail. The tom bowed his head, unable to meet her glare.
"I believed it was the right thing to do. I'm sorry," he spoke, his gaze trained on the floor. The she-cat just sighed and shook her head, eyes softening.
"What's done is done. You must have learnt by now that you can't change the past," she smirked. His head snapped up.
"That was cold," he growled. The she-cat shot him an unimpressed glance but he continued, "Anyway, if we can't change the past, then surely we can change the future."
"I don't think you understand." The she-cat shook her head before carrying on, her voice filled with wisdom, "You can change the future by your actions but you can't change your fate. You cannot change your destiny. It has been laid down for you by the stars."
"If this is the case, then we need a miracle to change what's going to happen," he muttered, "Because this is going to destroy the Clans." The she-cat rolled her eyes.
"Stop being so dramatic, it's just the trust that will change, everything else will be the same," the tom's eyes grew dark, his black tail flicking from side to side.
"Then why do I feel this deep sense of foreboding, knotting inside me? Something big is going to change, something not even we can control, something not even we can foresee. Does that not scare you?" His gaze was trained on her as she struggled to comprehend his words. It was obvious he had weakened her; her posture had changed from a strong stance to a small, curled crouch and her eyes, which had earlier held a powerful fire, were now dull and lifeless. She gulped visibly.
"Yes, yes that does scare me," She murmered, her voice quiet and nervous, "But how come you feel this so strongly? In my mind it's only a distant cry, but to you it sounds like a screech." He flinched at her imagery, the true words cutting through him. He forced himself to reply.
"I don't know. All I know is this has been preying on the Clans for a long time, preying on us for a long time. And we've been completely oblivious up until now." The tom reached out a paw to her, and she looked up, defeated. It was terrifying to think about but too dangerous not to.
"Well, now that you've told her everyone is going to know," The tom shot her an irritated glare but sighed deeply.
"How do we control this?" The she-cat questioned, "How do we control something we cannot foretell?"
"We can't," replied the tom, "And that's the problem."
