Starting July/4/2020 (Happy Independence Day Americans!) This story is getting a BIG Makeover. I may be changing quite a lot of things and adding more detail.
---enjoy---
He is her little brother's best friend. She is his best friend's older sister. They grew up together, which makes them childhood friends, but in truth neither of them really knows if they can be called friends. To her, he was just the friend her brother brings home often, and since she had her own friends the two of them exchanged very few words despite being classmates. So in the end, their relationship can only be described as...awkward.
As always, Kuroo hung out at Kenma's house before going home from school. Ever since his grandparents passed away he found himself staying with the Kozumes more than his own house, the main reason being his dad always working late. Today was just another day after practice. Kenma would be playing on his PSP, and Kuroo would either do his homework or read Monthly Volleyball. After a small knock on Kenma's door, a girl with shoulder length black hair and golden cat like eyes poked her head in. "I brought cookies and juice," she said in a soft voice. Like her younger brother, she is a quiet girl.
"Ah, thanks Izumi," Kuroo put down the magazine as the girl entered the room and set a tray of cookies and drinks on the small table.
"It's nothing," Izumi replied quietly before turning for the exit.
"Nee-chan," Kenma called. Izumi stopped at the door and turned around with a hum. "Your finger..." Kuroo quickly turned his gaze toward Izumi's hand, but she covered it before he could see. His eyes then trailed up towards her timid looking face. As always her eyes trailed slightly downward, a sign of lack of confidence.
"It's nothing," she replied as she walked out of the room. As always, Kenma is so observant, Kuroo thought. He pondered whether or not he should ask the younger boy what happened to his sister's hand.
"What happened?" he finally decided to ask. Kuroo picked up a cookie from the tray and popped it into his mouth. As always, the cookies Izumi makes are perfectly tuned to his taste, chewy, and not too sweet.
"I don't know. She had quite a few bandages," Kenma replied nonchalantly. It's not as if the siblings did not care for each other, but they're both awkward children that are unwilling to pry more than the other is willing to let on. Kuroo understands that from years of spending time with them, but he still can't fully figure out what the two are thinking, especially Izumi.
Maybe it's because of her naturally timid nature, Izumi doesn't like to meet people's gaze. She doesn't talk much as well so people rarely know what she's thinking. Kuroo often found her in a daze, expressionless. Her mind seemed to be wandering somewhere but he just didn't know where.
Kuroo found himself reading the same paragraph five times. The way Izumi hid her hands behind her back kept replaying in his mind. Curiosity was eating him up as the teenager became restless. This sister of his friend has always been a klutz. Since she's often in a daze, she would get startled by the timer when the oven is done, and out of panic she'd grab the pan without a glove, often burning herself. He's seen that happen countless times. There are also times when she slipped and knocked a bowl of pancake batter over onto her head. As memories of the girl started filling his head, Kuroo found himself grinning.
Strange. For some reason Kuroo has found himself thinking of Izumi more and more often lately. She was always just there, but for some reason he found himself looking her way during class, catching glimpses of her when he passes by the kitchen where the home economics club are during club activities. There were nights that he dreamt of them dating. All of these signs are telling him one thing, he likes her. But how come?
