My brother and I had had parents once. They died when I was very young. They had set out to go visit some family members, but their ship had crashed. So, I was left with my brother to take care of me.

We had given each other nicknames. I called him Laddie and he called me Maddie. Or sometimes, his "Little Princess".

"What should we do today, Laddie?" I asked.

My brother was the Duke of Buckingham. We were so close that we were inseparable. If you saw one of us, the other was close by.

"Anything you want to do, my Little Princess." He responded.

I giggled at my nickname and ran to a field that was close by. It was filled with flowers and big trees. I sat down and smoothed out my dress and began picking flowers.

Laddie sat next to me and helped me make a daisy crown.

"There." He said, smiling widely and placing the crown on my head. "Now you are truly a little princess."

The crown was a bit too big for my head and it slipped down the side slightly, causing me to giggle. Laddie laughed and picked me up, spinning me around. I laughed and was soon set back down on the ground. My brother grabbed me and tickled me, causing me to fall on the ground with laughter.

"Laddie! I'm going to die!" I screamed through fits of laughter.

"Oh no! Don't die! I'll miss you!" He said, continuing to tickle me.

He picked me up and hugged me tightly.

"I'd miss you so much." He whispered.

"I'd miss you, too." I responded. "Like how I miss Mommy and Daddy."

A few stray tears fell from my face and my brother soon let go of me. He looked at me and wiped the tears from my eyes.

"I'm here, Little Princess."

I smiled and leaned against him.

But that was long ago. As we grew older, we got closer, and never really fought. It was the day before my fourteenth birthday when I discovered that my brother had been hiding something from me.

I ran into his office, hoping to play a game. I opened the door and saw him hide a bunch of papers into his desk, quickly.

"What are you hiding?" I asked, curiously.

"It's nothing." My brother replied.

"Yes it is. You're hiding something from me."

"No I'm not."

"What is it?" I asked.

"Not saying." He answered, smiling.

"Why not?"

"It's a surprise." He responded.

I grinned widely.

"What kind of surprise?" I continued.

"One that the entire world won't suspect!" He exclaimed, a gleam of excitement playing in his brown eyes.

"Oh now you really must tell me!"

"I won't tell you until tonight. That reminds me, I got you something."

"Laddie, don't make me guess anymore!" I exclaimed.

"You'll see tonight, Maddie. I promise." He said, kissing my forehead.

He opened the door and lightly pushed me.

"Run along now. I've got a big surprise to work on."

I smiled and skipped down the hall.

Little did I know that that night, my brother would show me plans that I never wanted to take part of.

"Come, sister." He said.

He took my hand and lead me into his office. He opened a draw and pulled out a small box and handed it to me excitedly.

"Happy Birthday!" He exclaimed.

I laughed and opened the box to see a beautiful blue gem. I gasped and held up the necklace and watched it sparkle against the light.

"Laddie, it's beautiful." I said.

"Do you like it?" He asked.

"I love it. Thank you so much."

"Let me help you put it on."

I handed him the necklace and turned my back to him while he snapped the necklace on. I admired how it lay gently against my collar bone.

"Thank you so much." I said again, hugging my brother.

He wrapped his arms around me and held me tightly.

"Are you ready to see the surprise?" He asked.

I looked up at him and nodded. He opened a drawer and pulled out the papers I had seen earlier that day.

"What is it?" I asked.

"The perfect plan to get what I want." He responded.

I furrowed my eyebrows and picked up an image of a ship that was on a piece of paper. It had been modified to fly.

"We are going to steal the real plans. And then we will have the most amazing thing this world has ever seen." He said.

I looked up at him.

"We?" I asked.

"Yes. And we will destroy anyone who gets in our way."

"Destroy? Laddie..." I began, shaking my head.

"It's brilliant!" He said to himself.

I set the paper down and looked up at him.

"Laddie... I don't think this is a good idea." I told him, honestly.

"Why not? Maybe, we could even kill those filthy Musketeers!"

"Laddie? Where did all of this come from? What's happened to you?" I asked.

"I've shown my true colors, sister."

"This isn't the real you." I protested. "None of this is."

"How do you know what the real me is like?" He questioned, looking down at me.

"I've lived with you long enough to know who you are."

"Madeline, my sister. This could be everything for us."

"But we already have everything. Something has poisoned your mind, Laddie. I don't want any part in these plans you've got."

My brother looked down at me with a look I could not read.

"Then you can leave." He replied, softly.

"What?" I asked, confused.

"Leave! And don't come back!"

Tears filled my eyes. My brother has changed terribly. I couldn't stay for one more moment. I threw on my cloak and left. My brother could toy with his own evil ideas. I don't want any part in it.

I got on my horse and began to ride away. Right at the gates, I looked up and saw my brother watching from a window. I let a tear fall as I rode farther and farther away from home.
