Sebastian x Reader
---Sebastian's pov---
That afternoon was strange, many things had happened that day that even I had never seen before, Ciel lost a game of chess, and he also let someone win.
"Your move" Ciel repeated, he seemed to have been getting impatient with her, surprisingly this put me on edge. During breakfast I had told Ciel about our guest, he seemed very interested in her power having never met a shape shifter before. Although I wasn't sure she could control it fully yet, I however know a lot about the odd things that often occur in this world. Being a demon has its perks you get to meet a lot of interesting people and learn a lot about them. I told Ciel that if he could let her stay as perhaps an employee I could tutor her on how to shape shift more effectively, so she could be of more use to him in his game. However I would have to spend more time around her and I wasn't sure that I should, she was distracting. How could I continue to be one hell of a butler, with her around as a distraction? However, I certainly didn't want her to leave…You see? There she was in my mind again, yet another distraction as I missed a note on the violin as I was playing during their chess match, I bowed and apologised before going to make some tea, hmm I wonder if she likes Earl Gray…?
---Your Pov---
"Your move" Ciel repeated, honestly the boy was impatient did he not realise that chess was a game where you must consider all possible outcomes before making each move? I sighed and moved a pawn forward two spaces.
"There, happy?" I said exasperated.
"Very good, now I'd like to discuss your stay, here in the Phantomhive manor." He said barely even glancing at the board as he moved another piece, just then Sebastian's beautiful violin playing stopped and Ciel glared at his butler. Sebastian bowed gracefully and apologised for a mistake I hadn't noticed, before hurrying away into another room, he was certainly odd. Ciel chuckled under his breath before saying, "Hah, I have never seen him so flustered before, particularly over a mere human, cats sure, but you, hah…" I wasn't sure what to say to that, the thought of Sebastian thinking about me made me feel very strange again, like how I felt when he stroked my ear or when I woke up to find him kneeling by my head or when he picked me up after another attack from the dog named Pluto.
"Well," I said moving one Bishop from his original place, "I can only hope I am allowed to stay long enough to fluster him some more," Ciel smiled and briefly I saw his left eye twinkle wickedly as if having a wonderful idea.
"I have decided to let you stay for as long as you like Miss _____.  As long as you stay not as a guest but as some sort of servant for me." I was shocked, I had convinced myself the boy didn't like me. The game continued for a while, pawns were taken along with bishops and the odd rook, I then looked at him saying;
"Thank you very much Earl Phantomhive, it would be a great honour to work here for you, what would you have me do?" we were continually moving pieces, and then I noticed him move his Knight in a way knights are not supposed to move, he looked up at me.
"This chess board is like my life," he paused thinking about his words carefully. "Each person I know has a role in my game and this-" he held up his king. "-is me. Your work shall be to protect the King and if necessary-" his wandering knight took one of my pawns, "-sacrifice yourself for my dream." He looked up and smiled. "Check"
"That was an illegal move." I said disgruntled by his high and mighty words that were ended by his cheating.
"there are no illegal moves in my life's game miss _____, no rules, no regulations, just me, my disposable pieces and my knight whom is devoted to protecting my dream," he said gesturing to the board, and then to his Knight and then to his King, still smiling sarcastically.
"You say life has no rules," I said noticing he had left himself open for me to move out of check and put his King into checkmate all in one move. I paused, "but you are wrong…our lives are full of rules, they are the laws we must abide by lest we want to be punished by our dear queen." I said as I used my bishop to take his queen whom was previously blocking his king from checkmate. I smiled gleefully having won the game. "Checkmate" I said still smiling. "So my dear king you wish for me to be your pawn in your life's game?" I paused, I was about to reject his offer with a speech on how I would never sacrifice myself to aid his dream, when suddenly…
"This afternoon's tea is Earl Gray," smiled Sebastian, although this smile looked awfully fake. He handed a cup to Ciel and then paused to look at me before handing me mine, our hands brushed as he gave me the cup. I blushed, and immediately looked down at the cup and took a sip. I could feel Sebastian's gaze lingering on me even though I was not looking at him. "I trust everything is to your liking, Master? Miss _____?"
"Fine Sebastian," said Ciel, smirking at his butler. "So Miss _____, do you accept my generous offer or would you prefer we place you back in the gutter where we found you?" I realised he was right of course I could take the job and have a chance at a normal life, or I could die from being beaten on the streets or hunger or thirst.
"Thank you Earl, or should I say young master, I will accept your kind offer gratefully. You are truly saving me." I could have sworn I saw Ciel blush a little, it was almost…cute, if I were a lot younger I might have fallen for him…although I did still have a very handsome man stood beside where I was sat. Looking at Sebastian I could see he looked very pleased, I hoped it was at my promised stay here, but it wasn't likely.
"I suppose until I find you a more suited position you can become a maid. I'm sure Mey-rin will have another uniform for you…it will be nice to have a beautiful woman around the house," said Ciel playfully, I even blushed a little when he said; "don't you agree Sebastian." Sebastian just glared at Ciel, "Sebastian I asked you a question…don't you think Miss _____ is beautiful?" Sebastian looked away before saying,
"Yes, my Lord" Ciel smiled like a child with a brand new toy, I think he found teasing Sebastian to be the best thing in the world.
"Very good, well then Miss _____, I will get Mey-rin to show you to your room and give you a new uniform, you may have today off duty but tomorrow you will start work, we have a fancy dress ball coming up soon so there will be many preparations"
"Thank you Young Master" I said getting out of my chair, with a slight bow I said "and thank you for the match and for letting me win." A girl around my age if not then a little older came into the room. She had pink-red hair tied into pigtails on each side of her head, a maid outfit and most noticeably a pair of thick, large, round spectacles which covered half her face. She had a wonderfully cheerful voice which made me smile when she started to talk.
"Hello, you must be Miss _____, Tanaka told me about you, I'm Mey-rin. You called young master?"
"Yes Mey-rin. Please can you show Miss _____ to her room and give her a spare maid uniform, she is going to be staying with us for a while," Mey-rin looked at me and blushed while she adjusted her glasses.
"so…pretty…." She suddenly looked shocked at herself and coughed, "I, I mean yes Master." She smiled grabbed my hand and led me out of the room, I stopped her just before leaving and smiled at her.
"just a moment Mey-rin." I turned to face my young master, "Master you said something about a knight who protects your dreams…out of interest who did you mean." Ciel merely smiled and nodded to Sebastian, who chuckled a little and bowed to me. I blushed again, smiled back to the boy and his butler and curtsied back at Sebastian, before hurrying out of the living room after Mey-rin.
Just outside the living room door I saw three men, two of whom were whistling trying desperately to act nonchalant, I can only assume they had been pressing their ears against the door just moments before. The only man I recognised was the little chibi Tanaka, he was still sipping at his cup of green tea. The other two men sort of stared at me for a moment.
One of them looked older than me perhaps he was in his early twenties he had an unlit cigarette in his mouth (that is before he saw me and gaped he had a cigarette in his mouth now it was just on the floor) , blonde hair and a bit of stubble on his chin, his attire suggested he was a chef though from the singed fabric and general smell of burning that lingered around him I could only assume he didn't cook very well.
The other man looked quite a bit younger than the blond with the cigarette, he was maybe my age or a year or so younger. He had blonde hair too and a sun hat hung around his neck he had a cheerful smile on his face, and a lot of mud on the bottom of his trousers 'a gardener?' I thought to myself. He had a silly grin on his face and his eyes were wide and set on me. I laughed nervously.
"Um, hello. I'm _____ you must be the other servants…hi Tanaka nice to see you again."
"Ho oh oh" was his reply, it made me smile. The older blonde laughed loudly and stooped to pick up his cigarette.
"Sorry for staring, we didn't expect you to be so, well, never mind that. Nice to meet'cha, I'm Baldroy, but you can call me Baldo if you like." I smiled at Baldo.
"Very nice to meet you Baldo." I laughed and then I turned to the younger blonde, "may I ask your name?" he blushed but grinned.
"Finnian, but you can call me Finny everyone else does, do you want me to show you to your room?"
"Hey Finny none of that I introduced myself first I should take her up." Retorted Baldo.
"Ho oh oh" said Tanaka I wasn't sure whether he wanted to take he to my room or whether it was just a sound either way it made me smile.
"Well actually guys," I said, "Mey-rin was asked to show me to my room, I'm going to be working here for a while, so I hope we could all become great friends. The master said something about a fancy dress ball coming up, so I guess we all will be working really hard for it. I'm eager to see how well you do all of your jobs." I smiled my best smile at my new friends. Turned to Mey-rin saying, "I guess we should get going, huh?" Mey-rin blushed again, it was a little strange to see these people focusing on me so intently, it was as though they adored me.
"Uh, yes Miss ______, I-"
"Please call me _____, let's get going" Mey-rin smiled, I smiled back at her and waved goodbye to the boys, bowed to Tanaka and followed Mey-rin to my room. As we walked away I heard the men bickering behind us.
"Ahh Baldo I think I'm in love I'm going to pick some of the best roses and put them in her room." Sighed Finny.
"Don't you dare Finny, anyway some dumb roses won't compare to the nicest pancakes she will ever taste." Mumbled Baldo.
"You are just going to ask Sebastian to make them aren't you?"
"Am not!"
"Are too!"
"Am not!" that continued pretty much until I was out of earshot the only interjection was the odd "ho oh oh" from Tanaka. This house was crazy but as I followed the smiling (if a little clumsy) maid down the hall, I knew that normal was just so overrated. Yes, this craziness was more my style. The image of Sebastian bowing to me popped into my head Just as I reached the door to my new room. I couldn't help smiling and blushing, well, I guess I'm just getting some good luck.
---Sebastian's pov---
When she left I heard Finny and Baldo talking to her outside, I didn't like the idea of them looking at her, though I wasn't sure why. I stared at the door for a while after she left, that was until I heard Ciel's laughter.
"Well Sebastian, she certainly is interesting. "Tell me is it really just her soul you have taken a liking to?" I smiled at him sarcastically.
"I have no interest in manmade trash." I said, though I felt a strange pang of guilt when I said it, what was she doing to me?
"Hah, Sebastian you are fooling no one…and I'm sure I told you to never lie to me." Ciel gave me a knowing look and then went over to a bookshelf in the corner of the room and began to read a random book from his vast collection.
The mention of my name outside the door drew my attention, Baldo and Finny were fighting over another girl. I couldn't help but sigh, and feel a little jealous, I knew her better than any of those fools. She is too good for them, she is the curious white cat with black paws whom I rescued. None of them have ever liked cats as much as me, I could only hope that she wouldn't get attached to any of the others before I get to spend some time with her.
My my how troublesome, she truly is an awful distraction, I smiled to myself as I went to make another pot of tea maybe I will take another cup of Earl Gray up to her room. Just to be hospitable…nothing more.
