Chapter Fifteen

The cold January air makes all warmth disappear from Dan's body.

He listens to the final part of the outdoor ceremony, before they close the casket and bury Phil in the ground.

This was this final step of letting go, but he couldn't do it. He wants Phil with him forever and doesn't think he'll be able to survive.

Before he knew it, the ceremony was over and everyone was standing up to leave.

Dan walks over to the casket one last time and takes one last look at Phil before he can never see him again.

Dan places one last thing in the casket before he leaves.

The reason why they fell in love

Dan mouths the words I love you before the men close the casket.

He walks away and takes one last glimpse as they place Phil's body into the ground.

Dan jumps at the feeling of someone tapping his shoulder.

"Uh, Dan?" Louise asks "is it a good time? Or do you need a moment?"

Dan just looks Louise in the eyes. She can see how broken down he is. He begins to sob and pulls Louise in for a tight hug.

"It's all my fault!" Dan yells "it's my fault he's dead! It should've been me!"

Dan struggles to breathe and Louise parts from the hug.

"It's not your fault Dan, you couldn't stop what your father did"

"Phil jumped in front of me...."

"What?"

"My dad aimed at me, he shot, and Phil jumped in front of it...."

Silence

Louise just hugs him.

"That definitely means Phil cared about you, that he loved you with all his heart. You meant something to him Dan"

"Thank you for making me feel better Louise"

"No problem"

Louise and Dan end up going to a coffee shop down the corner from Dan's house. Phil's favorite place.

They sat in the booth in the corner, looking out to the busy streets.

"I guess you deserve some explanation..." Louise begins

"Yeah....."

"It started when Phil ran over to you on his birthday to take care of you, Caspar thought you were a bad influence on Phil. He never liked you."

"Well then...."

"He asked Phil for your number, pretending that he needed to ask you something, but he's your blackmailer Dan"

"What?"

"It started off as a prank, and then I found out the real reason why Caspar was doing this"

"And that is?"

"He was in love with Phil"

"I-I-I'd never expect him...." Dan trailed off

"Dan, he wanted you dead, he probably still does, that night at the wall? When Cat kissed you? That was us"

"Are you fucking kidding me?"

"Dan, Caspar isn't a good person, I don't trust him anymore and I'm no longer his friend. He either wanted you to kill yourself. He hated you from day one and wanted you dead."
