"KELLY!! We're gonna be late if you don't pick up the friggin pace". Casey said as she hastily grabbed her leather jacket from the arm of the living room chair and speed walked towards the door. "Ok seriously... the coffee, the boring barista, and the sticky tables with multiple different flavored gum chunks under them will all be in the same spot no matter what time we get there so chill". Kelly replied after finishing up her mascara. "Ugh I've always loved you enthusiasm" Casey said as she hopped behind Kelly and shoved her out the door. The two girls have been best friends since junior year in high school. They've been with each other through thick and thin... First car, first long term boyfriends...and when Kelly's dad died a few weeks before she went off to college Casey was there for that too. They both attend the same college as sophomores in Whentworth University now.
(Flashback...)
During their freshmen year Kelly convinced Casey to go to this HUGE WELCOME FRESHMEN!! party thrown at the hottest frat house on campus. At the party, the best friends were split up by the commotion and chaos, and basically thrown to the wind. The music was so loud they couldn't even yell out to each other. One thing led to another and, one drink led to another, and suddenly Kelly was on the island in the middle of the kitchen doing body shots and screaming "YOLO". Casey immediately hopped out of her antisocial corner, blasted through the crowd of drunk, sweaty, screaming, hormonal young adults, grabbed Kelly's arm and yanked her off the island. The crowd around her began to boo as she drug a very drunk and wobbly Kelly behind her out the door. Casey took her to the nearest coffee shop (Cozy Joe) and shoved her in the closest booth when they got there. They stayed there until closing time, drinking coffee until Kelly was sober, and talking about how that night would go down in history as the most embarrassing moment of their lives...though it was more embarrassing for Kelly.
(End flashback...)
Since that night, that coffee house had been their go to place. Casey's favorite thing to do was to go there late at night, sit in that same booth, and sip her Carmel frappe, while chit chating and gazing out the window at the starry night sky.
(At the coffee house...)Kelly and Casey were at their regular table when the barista approached them with a cup in his hand, baring his usual look of boredom and irritation as he handed Casey the cup. "Here, compliments of some random guy" he said as he stalked away from a very confused Casey. "But I haven't even ordered yet" Casey tried yelling after the barista but he was long gone. "Ooooooo Casey got a secret admirer" Kelly taunted as she wiggled her fingers at her best friend and grinned. The girl rolled her eyes and cautiously brought the cup to her lips. "Oh my God it's my favorite drink! How.. how did they..who.." She said as she looked around the practically deserted coffee house, a little weirded out now. "Case chill it was probably an observation..you get that drink every friggin time you know". Kelly said nonchalantly as she scrolled through an app on her phone. "I guess you're right huh anyone could've made that assumption..hell it could've easily just been the barista.." Casey trailed off with a slightly disgusted facial expression.
A few minutes later while the two girls were talking and laughing the barista approached the table again, this time with a muffin and a sticky note attached to it. The barista sat the muffin on the table and proceeded to walk away when Casey spoke up. "Hey I'm..uhh..ever so great full for your kind gestures..but...I'm not sure that I like you that way" She said, putting a little emphasis on the words 'that way' ,with an empathetic look on her face. The barista turned to face the two girls, looking slightly irritated, but in Casey's mind...constipated and replied "This isn't from me, if I wanted to ask you out, I'd sack up and talk to you face to face like a real man..but thanks for letting me down easy" he said in a sarcastic tone, and with that, once again he was on his way back to the counter, to finish off the rest of his shift.
After Kelly yelled a few unpleasant words after him, Casey, who seemed to be sporting a slight pink tint on her caramel colored cheeks, from the events before, began examining the muffin. "Blueberry huh" she stated as she squinted her green eyes and furrowed her eyebrows in question. She moved to pickup the sticky note and began to read it in her head "Blueberry because I know you can't have nuts..you're allergic..I know that and so much more ;) ". The note slipped out of her hand as she froze in place. Kelly looked up and saw her friend's face washed pale with fear. "Casey what's wrong, I don't mean to be completely cliché but you look like you've just seen a ghost..... Iw, gross, scratch that you just look scared" Kelly said as she scrunched her face. Casey swallowed hard and pushed the sticky note toward her best friend. Kelly read the note out loud, rolled her eyes and said "wow that's so lame someone really just tried to Pretty little liars us...Seriously" she said with an irritated expression. "Kells I don't think this is a joke....I'm gonna go talk to the barista, and try to see who sent this". Casey said as she got up and headed for the counter. When she got there the barista seemed to be packing up as if to leave. "Hey um I'm sorry about earlier, I totally misread the situation... but do you know who sent this" she held up the yellow sticky note drawing the barista's attention briefly. "No...there was a note and money telling me what to do so I did it no questions asked" he stated flatly not even bothering to address the apology. "Ok well do you have the other note?" The girl asked as she began to become a bit aggravated by his attitude. "Nope I trashed it as the note said...and I'm not digging in the trash because I already took it out, now if you're done with all these questions Inspector Gadget, I'm gonna need you and your friend to finish up because I've gotta close up shop its 12:00". "You know what screw you!" Casey huffed as she turned around and headed back towards the table. "Hey what the hell was that all about, you ok...do I need to show him what damage these hands can do". Kelly said as she stood up. "No we're leaving c'mon". Casey said as she made her way to the door.
As soon as the girls stepped outside the cold air hit them like a ton of bricks. Suddenly Casey realized something. "CRAP I left my jacket in there". She said as she threw her hands in the air, " I gotta go back". "I'll wait here" Kelly said arms folded wrapped up in herself. Casey pulled the door open and stepped inside, immediately greeted by the warmth of the shop. She heard a weird click sound come from the door but decided to ignore it and proceeded to grab her jacket. Just as she did the lights shut out and a door slammed. "Hello...HELLO... Rude barista guy I'm still here, I just had to get my jacket....dude this isn't funny, I'm outta here" She headed towards the door a little shaken, but intent on getting out of there. She went to push the handle but jumped out of her skin when she heard the sound of glass shattering. The unnerved girl began to frantically shove the door but it wouldn't budge, so she began to bang the window trying to get Kelly's attention, but when she look out there her best friend was nowhere to be found. Casey turned her back to the door trying frantically to see through the dark but it wasn't working. Her voice cracked as she began to speak "whoever you are this isn't funny...barista guy I will have your ass fired for this you know that". Her palms began to sweat and her heart began to race. Suddenly a terrifying scrapping noise began to make its way towards her and before she knew it a large dark figure was standing directly in front of her breathing heavily. From outside the coffee house in the car Kelly heard a shrill gut wrenching scream then...dead silence.
