A university lecture is where my day begins.
I play with the loose threads around the rips in my boyfriend jeans. I'm clattering the pen beneath my teeth as I put my feet flat against the chair in front. I sat in a seat that didn't have anyone at either side because at these lectures everyone seems to squeeze in together.
This is my second week at Uni so I've already been to a few lectures, unlike some people who haven't been required to go yet. I'm doing a joint honours, which means I'm studying two things, Biology and some teaching course, so that I can become a Biology teacher when I graduate.
The notes I'm making are sloppy as it's basically a repeat of stuff I already know. The lecturers voice is dull and boring, droning on repeat, until it gets interrupted by the door opening and a sandy haired boy walking in. The lecturer doesn't stop but points him to the sea of bored looking students. I quickly realise the seats around me are the only ones free, and trying not to be noticed, I sink into my chair like a turtle going into it's shell.
"No, no, no," I mutter under my breath as he mindlessly pulls the chair out beside me.
I take a quick glance next to me and look at him, and he looks good. His hazel eyes are still the same ones that showed me love, and his same slightly crooked smile, was showing on a permanent as per usual. Putting his book on the desk, his pen rolls off the table to the floor.
"Shit," I whisper trying to cover my face slightly, but it's too late. I hear his breath hitch in his throat as his eyes clap on me, and he begins to move in slow motion taking me in.
"Renee," he gasps, hardly believing his eyes. He gulps loudly and nips himself, in which I hear him "ouch" in pain.
"Ashton," I sigh, trying to show some slight excitement. Ashton opened his pages, ignoring me completely, and began scribbling. I don't know how he's making so many notes, this class is shit.
I look back down to try and make notes myself, but I can't because memories come flooding back to my brain.
"Renee," Ashton called from my kitchen.
I jumped down the stairs, holding on to the banister as I go.
"Yeah babe?" I ask and I reach the kitchen.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Renee, happy birthday to you," Ashton sang holding a chocolate cake in front of him. I blew out all the candles and we both cheered happily. Ashton put the cake down on the worktop and placed his hands on my waist. He bent down from his 6" height down to my 5"4 height to place his lips delicately on mine. I moved my lips against his gently as he picked me up and placed me on the kitchen side. I gave him one last kiss before sticking my finger in the chocolate icing and wiping it on his nose.
"You didn't," he mock angered with a fake scowl. I nodded and jumped down and ran away from Ashton. I ran straight out of my back door and onto the grass of my back garden. Before I can get very far, two strong arms wrapped around me and pulled me back whilst I kicked and giggled.
I came back to reality when Ashton placed a piece of paper on my desk and tapped it with his pen. I smiled slightly and opened it up.
Renee,
Oh my god! How have you been? It's been a while, well not really, like 2-3 months?
I didn't know you wanted to do Biology, you told me you wanted to be a vet, I dunno maybe you changed your mind.
I was wondering if you wanted to meet me for coffee at the Starbucks on campus?
Nice to see you,
Ashton X
I reread the letter a few times, to note how awkward and shy Ashton sounds compared to his usual self...
"You don't believe me do you?" Ashton smirked, spinning the straw in his milkshake before taking a massive gulp of the Oreo concoction.
"I'm not sure," I replied, a blush creeping into my cheeks. Ashton had just told me he loved me for the first time whilst he held my hand and we drank milkshakes.
"Ok," Ashton shrugged pushing himself back on his chair.
For a second I though he was getting up to storm out because he was angry that I didn't believe him. I only didn't believe him because we hadn't been together that long although he reassured me that he'd been falling for me for a while before. I was watching him as he climbed onto the chair and cleared his throat.
"Everyone," he yelled, but people still carried on their conversations around him.
"Ashton, no," I pleaded, pulling my hood up and sinking into my chair.
"Shut up!" Ashton yelled, grabbing the attention of everyone around, "I'm madly, deeply, truthfully, in love with my beautiful girlfriend, Renee."
I couldn't help but smile widely as he expressed his feelings for me, and a pang of something loitered in my belly, making butterflies flutter around. I heard a chorus of cheers and clapping as Ashton jumped down from his chair and walked around the table towards me. He pushed my hood down then cupped my cheeks with his hands. He pressed his lips to mine with such passion as people's roars increased.
"I love you okay?" He said with a reassuring smile on his face.
"I love you," I returned squeezing his bicep. He looked shocked before grinning widely and kissing me again.
As I played the memory in my head, I smiled a lazy smile at the thoughts as I twiddled with my short blonde hair.
Then in the very bottom of my stomach, I got a pain, not a physical pain, but a metaphorical hurt and I realised that I missed this and I missed him.
I looked in his direction and he was already looking at me, I smiled at him weakly and he returned, before we both got back to work.
