Ren's eyes rested on a large family gathered around a fire by themselves. He approached the mother and bent to talk low in her ear. "How many did you lose?" He murmured gently.
She looked up at him, her stony expression softened by tears glistening in her eyes. "Two," she said. "My husband and eldest daughter."
"What was your daughter's name?"
"Aldyth." She looked at him, confused. "Why?"
"I have things to discuss with you when this is all cleared up." He straightened. "I think we all need time to grieve."
He moved on, checking on other groups of people, but the wheels in his mind were turning. Eventually, he found Evelyn and pulled her aside. "I need your help."
"With what?"
Ren nodded towards Aldyth's family. "They lost their father, along with the oldest daughter. Would you go take care of them for me?"
"Me? How?"
"I don't know. Whatever they need."
"I'm horrible in these situations. I don't know how to comfort people, how to talk to them when they've been through something like this."
"At least try."
Evelyn watched his face for a moment. "Okay." She took a deep breath and walked over, sitting next to the new oldest sister. Ren watched her for a few minutes, and eventually she lost her stiffness. Ren knew she was doing well when she took a toddler on her lap and helped feed him. He sighed. "There you go, Aldyth. I promised you my best."
