I feel a heavy pile of books drop onto my feet and bend to pick them up while I hear, "Watch where you're going, asshole!" At those words, I drop the books back onto the ground and look to see who I'm facing. Alex. Shit. I turn around and start to walk away when I find myself face to face with the ground. There is a sharp pain sprouting in my back. "Don't walk away from me!" I stand back up and continue down the hall, expecting to be pushed again. I glance over my should and see Jeremiah talking to Alex with an angry look on his face. Gratefulness swells in my chest, but I don't say anything. I just keep going, feeling my phone continue to blow up in my pocket. Currently, Mitch is trying to call me. I answer, thankful to hear his voice.
"Why didn't you text me or something? I thought something was wrong!"
"Sorry, all my professors are pissed at me because I was gone for so long."
"When are you coming back?"
"Right now, actually." I say, stepping outside into the cool air. I glance next to me and see a melting pile of snow with footprints and a fading sled trail in it.
"Good. Mommy needs you." I swallow nervously and continue toward my car. When I get to where it should be, I mutter, "Oh, shit."
"What? Are you okay? Wyatt, no!" I hear him scream. Even through the phone, I hear the cat's loud whine. It barely registers, though, as I read the piece of bright yellow paper taped to the sign that reads #2011. 'To whomever this may concern, an unauthorized vehicle has been left in this location longer than the limit exceeds without proper validation and has been towed for that reason. Thank you for your patience.'
"My car got towed." I groan, sitting on the semi-wet sidewalk behind the sign, crumpling the paper in my hand.
"What?! Why?"
"Apparently while I was away, my parking pass became invalid or something. They towed my car." I un-crumple the paper and squint to read the very bottom. "And I have a fee. Great."

I end up getting a ride with Kirstie, who drops me off and then goes back to her own house. Mitch is sitting on the front porch chatting happily with our neighbor that I remember as Todrick. When he sees me, he stands up and runs over, jumping onto me. I barely catch him with my hands under my legs as he crashes his lips against mine.
"I missed you so much." he mumbles, pulling away to set his head down on my shoulder. I glance over him at Todrick, who is smiling and holding a hand over his heart. I walk over to him and he squeals, "You two are the cutest thing."
"Thanks." I say quietly, blushing profusely, a small smile coming to my face.
"Scott, I was going to ask Toddy to come in for some tea or something, but I wanted to wait until you got home, just to make sure it was okay."
"Of course it is." I notice Todrick messing with a ring on his left hand, staring at it with a passively excited gaze. I vow to ask him about it once I put Mitch down, and lead him into the house.
"Um, do you mind if I run over and tell Kevin that I'm coming in? I don't want him to get worried."
"Sure. Go ahead." Mitch says, moving so that his forehead is pressed against my neck. His warmth sends waves through me. It is almost unsettling. I set him down on the couch and notice that he looks very tired.
"Are you okay?" I press my hand to his forehead. "You're burning up!"
"I'm fine. Just kind of tired."
"And you have a fever."
"I'm fine. I don't have a fever."
"Yes, you do." I argue, sitting next to him. He leans into me, lacing our hands together.
"Your hands are freezing." I say, the coldness of his hand remind me a little too much of when he was in a coma.
"I'm. Fine." he says, holding my gaze intensely. Reluctantly, I nod and go to open the door, where Todrick is now waiting.
