"What do you mean you won't be going to school with us this year?" Chloe asked. Her voice muffled over the telephone.
"I mean, I won't be going with you to Oasis Academy this year. I have been enrolled in a..." Emma received warning glances from her father. "In a different school this year."
"Where?" Chloe demanded.
Emma sighed. This was hard, how much could she tell her friends and what was she going to do this year for friends? "I don't actually know Chlo. I haven't been told yet... somewhere close by..." Emma paused. "Chlo? Would you mind telling the other girls for me?" she pleaded. I don't think I could say goodbye again.
"What do you mean 'you haven't been told yet'? The start of term is in five days."
"I know Chlo!" Emma shouted, tears threatening to spill over. "I- I've got to go Chloe. I'm really going to miss you."
"I'm going to miss you too, Em. I'll tell the rest of the girls tomorrow. I'll miss you. Bye."
Before Emma could say anything she heard a click, then the dial tone. "Bye," she whispered, then hung up. Emma let out a big sigh then wiped her eyes quickly before her father looked over.
"Are you sure you want to go there?" he asked with a nervous undertone Emma detected, as he came over and wrapped her up in a big hug.
"Yes, I am sure." Emma heard the words coming out of her mouth, and immediately knew they were true. I wouldn't choose to go anywhere else. I can't wait. Five days and then I'll be there.
"Come to the kitchen soon please. Your mother has supper ready," Dad said releasing Emma and walking out of the living room.
Emma quickly hung up the telephone that was still clutched tight in her hand and followed her dad to the kitchen. She smiled at her mum who was setting the table. She quickly sat down at the small table to get out of the way. Dad was already seated in front of Emma and soon enough Mum joined. The table was silent as Mum served the food. Emma thanked her than began to eat. She had no more than taken her first bite when-
BANG! CRASH!
Everyone jumped at the sound then quickly turned to look out the window the noise had come from. Nothing was there. Confused, Emma focused back onto her food. After she took a second bite she heard a taping noise from the same window.
She turned and sitting on the outside of the window frame where Mum's flower pot normally sat was a small tawny owl with dirt all over it and a parchment on its leg. The owl taped a few more times on the window then held up it's leg.
Emma looked over at her not-so-thrilled-to see-an-owl parents, then stood up. She opened the backdoor and walked over to the dirty owl and untied its letter. The owl gave a hoot, then flew away. Emma walked inside as she pried the wax of the letter. No sooner had she tore the wax off, it started talking.
"Mr and Mrs Dursley," came a male voice that Emma recognized as Uncle Harry's. "Please meet us at Kings Cross station in five days where you used to pick me up. We have Emma's belongings and will bring them with us. And Emma, Lily is most excited to see you again. See you soon."
The letter crumpled itself up and promptly vanished into smoke. Emma stared wide eyed at where the letter had been then looked at her uncomfortable parents.
"Howler," Dad explained quietly. As if the mere word caused bad memories.
"Oh."
Thanks Dad. That explains everything. Emma thought, but didn't voice her opinion aloud. They ate in silence. Mum and Dad looking over at the window as if they expected to see something, every few minutes.
