Emma looked out the window of Uncle Harry's flying car. It was dreadfully dreary out this morning. So Emma put on her warmest clothes before they left. "I wish Dad was with me now," Emma thought.
She had been looking forward to meeting her cousins, then Uncle Harry spoiled her mood by not bringing them along. They were with Aunt Ginny at Diagon Alley already. Emma glanced to the front seat at Uncle Harry - she was seated behind the passenger seat so this was not hard to do- and he looked as uncomfortable as she felt.
Feeling bad, Emma decided to try and start a conversation. "Who was Dad talking about last night? Voldemort? Why is it a big deal if he died?"
Harry immediately put one hand to his forehead, touching the lightning shaped scar. His other hand tightly clutched the steering wheel. His flattened his lips out and grimaced, as if repressing bad memories.
"Voldemort is dead, and it is a big deal because he was an unspeakable evil, Emma. Now if you don't mind, lets talk about something else," Harry finally said stiffly.
"Never mind." Emma blushed and looked back out the window. Even though there was loads of rain, it was very cool flying above the trees. Emma pressed her face up against the cold window and shivered, but stayed. The view was too beautiful to miss.
Eventually, Emma grew sleepy. "Where are we going?" she asked Uncle Harry.
"To London. We have about an hour more so you can sleep a little if you want."
Can he read minds or something? Maybe he is odd! Wait... if he can read mind then he can hear what I'm thinking... oops. Emma thought but instead said, "Thank you."
She dozed off and on during the next hour, waking only when Uncle Harry called Aunt Ginny to tell her how close they were. The last half hour, Emma kept herself awake. She didn't want to look like a mess when she met her cousins for the first time.
"You know, it's Lily's first year at Hogwarts. She was very excited to know that you'd be with her this year," Harry said awkwardly.
"Oh."
Brilliant reply, Emma thought. She looked back out the window and the car again was filled with silence. In the distance, Emma began to see London. It was so big! Emma had only ever been there once on a field trip and always wished to come back.
Slowly, Harry lowered the car into the ground and began to drive normally (as if you could call this whole trip normal). It wasn't nearly as exciting as being in the air, but Emma understood why they had to drive on the ground. If anyone saw them, the car would be torn apart so the humans- muggles as Emma was learning to call them- could understand how the car worked and so they could duplicate it. They drove through the new, modern part of London where Emma expected them to stop. They didn't.
"Where are we going?" she asked suddenly alarmed.
Harry chuckled. "We have to go to the older part of London."
Not very reassured, Emma sat stiffly in her seat. Where was she being taken? After a few minutes of driving, Harry pulled up to an old block of flats. He climbed out of the car and Emma copied him. Harry started walking down the road.
"Where are we going now?" Emma asked once she caught up to him.
"Diagon Ally," he said with a wink.
"Are my cousin's there?"
"Yep."
Emma fell into silent step next to her uncle.
This is so weird. I'm in London with my uncle who I had no clue existed. I'm going to some ally to buy stuff for some wizard school... I'm not dreaming am I?
