Collette's POV
We eventually stopped in a hood type of neighborhood, somewhere far from the center of Paris..
I stepped out of the mini van and looked around me. Everywhere you looked you saw flats and gang groups who were smoking, I hoped cigarettes, but it smelled like weed. You could also hear the sound of traffic really good and like in every big city there was this smell of pollution.
Am I really staying here?..
"Are you coming Collette?" Manuel called me.
He and Nana already were at the entrance of the flat so I nodded and rushed over to them.
Inside the flat you could still smell the weed scent from time to time and while we walked up the stairs to Nana's apartment I noticed how old the flat looked. There were cracks and holes in the grey/yellow walls and even some windows were broken.
Wait? Are those bulletholes?.. Damnn.
When we finally got to our floor we went left into a long hallway with doors on every side. Some of them were open so it allowed you to look inside and see how family's lived.
I stopped at one of the open doors and couldn't help it but stared inside.
You could see how a mother was hushing a child who cried loudly while the father walked around them, shouting that it was her fault that the child was crying. The woman was clearly beaten by the man and blood was streaming down her cheek as a result of a punch in the face.
I almost wanted to step inside and stand up for the woman, but got grabbed by the arm and pulled away.
"I know what you're thinking.." Manuel said when he saw my face.
"But this is a whole different world than yours, what you just saw happens everyday and believe me, there were lots of people before you who tried to change it".
"There must be something that we can do!" I hissed at him and pulled myself loose.
"No! There isn't, you can't change a world without knowing its way of life!" he said raising his voice.
I went quiet and walked by him to Nana who already stood at the end of the hallway while she waited for us.
She turned the key in the lock when we got to her and opened the door.
I went inside with her followed by Manuel, but couldn't see a thing because the whole house was dark.
"Can somebody please turn on a li-".
But before I could finish my sentence the lights went on and a group of five people, including Nana and Manuel, stood in front of me, poured confetti on me and shouted in unison:
"Bienvenue cher Collette!!".
I was completely surprised and immediately hugged by a girl who kissed me on the cheek while saying,
"Hi Collette, my name is Sharron, welcome to France!""Well, hi and thank you" I smiled when she let go of me.
"Now let me introduce you to your french family" she continued and turned around to the other four, pointing at each one of them.
"That is Devon, he is the second oldest"
She pointed at a tall man with a black jacket and jewellery. He came to me a gave me also kisses on the cheek, "I hope you will like it here" he said with a grin.
Sharron gave him a push and mumbled, "Tenir Devon!".
"Je fait juste une blague, putain" he said a little angry and walked off to another room.
Nana wanted to go after him but was stopped by Manuel, "Non maman, laissez-le" he spoke and she nodded.
Sharron then went on and pointed at the last boy I didn't know yet.
"That is Trish, he is the second youngest and yeah that makes me the youngest" she smiled. He also came over to me and hugged me welcome while saying, "You will like it here" and gave me a wink.
Sweet mother of God! There was that thick french accent again! Lord have mercy on my soul..
"And ofcourse you already know Manuel, he is the oldest of us four and that sweet old sugary lady over there is Nana" Sharron finished."Vieux?! Qui vous appelle vieux!" Nana laughed when Sharron ran past her also laughing.
I shook my head and already loved my french family.
"Well.." Manuel suddenly said while grabbing my suitcase,
"Shall we give you a tour?".
I was pleased and as a real gentleman Trish offered me his arm saying,
"This way Madam" making me laugh.
After I got the little tour through the appartment, Trish and Manuel showed me my bedroom.
It wasn't what you called the master bedroom, but it was okay. I had a bed and a closet for my stuff, also my window gave me a view of the entire neighborhood. Oh and not to forget,
I had a desk, with lamp and all!
I was happy with my bedroom and after I had thanked the guys for showing me around I began to unpack my suitcase.
Tomorrow was my first workday at the asylum just outside the city.
Nana had told me that I could get there with the subway, which is not my favorite way to travel.. I mean it's not that I hate the subway, it's more that I always have the feeling that whenever i'm in the subway something is about to happen. Ofcourse nothing really happens, but still.
I hung my last dress in the closet and when I closed it I heard Sharron calling my name.
"Collette, dinner is ready!".
"I'm coming!" I answered and quickly unpacked my workbag full of documents so I could read them after dinner. I laid them on my desk and even though I was in a hurry, my eye fell on an article about my clients..
It were all classified documents about the Bourgeois twins who were collected over the past few years.
This one was about the twins who had murdered an entire family and had placed them back in their house as what they called "living dolls..".
When the police found the murdered family the twins had left photos everywhere in the house on which you could see how the family was slaughtered.
A few of those photos were published with the article and on one of them you could see a small child, probably six years old crying with a knife on his throat..
"Oh god!" I whispered and felt chills everywhere.
"Collette? We're waiting!".
"Yes! sorry! I'm coming!", I said while I stood up and left my room.
"Why did it take you so long?" Manuel asked when I joined them at the dining table.
"Well, there was this article from my work and it made me curious and.."
"Arrêter de parler!" Nana suddenly said sternly, "Nous mangeons".
I nodded and became silent.
After a while everyone began to talk again while eating, but I kept silent thinking about tomorrow..
