     Sydney had been feeling pretty nervous about going to school and facing Toby. That's all she'd thought about all night long.

      Her old best friend had tried texting and calling her numerous times which she'd all ignored. She knew she had to face her in school also, though.

      She prayed to God Toby wasn't furious with her elbowing him. Maybe she'd tell him the truth? She hadn't figured out a plan just yet.

      Once she'd gotten to school, almost everyone knew what had gone down last night. There were rumors going around, one of them was that she got pregnant by Toby. The most ridiculous things had been spread.

      She didn't even understand how one had thought she had gotten pregnant. The only almost correct rumor was that he put the moves on her and she beat the ____ out of him. Excuse the blank thing for language, I think you get the gist.

      Sydney was approached by Jen, "Listen, I don't know what you're trying to pull here. First, you get all ticked about Jack then you go on a date with Toby? Oh! Then you are ticked off because we 'excluded' you but when your best friend tries to reach out to you you don't even reply. Care to explain?"

     Sydney wasn't in the mood to get into another fight. She'd had enough things swirling through her brain, she didn't need a fight to be added into the mix. All it was going to make was a big problem with everyone. Eventually, she would snap.

      That was not an option.

     "I've just been thinking things through. I also didn't get informed it was a date until we actually got there, okay. I didn't intentionally go to the movies with him thinking it was a date. You know I would never go if that's what I was informed of." Sydney walked away after that. She ended the conversation. Maybe she should have just walked away without saying anything but she felt as if she needed to explain herself, even though she shouldn't.

     She had English which her seat happened to be behind Toby.

     "Hey." She said. He didn't reply even though she knew he heard her.

     "Come on! At least let me explain things!" She tried again.

     He quickly turned around, "What is there to explain? You don't like me like that I get it. It's done, over with." He sat back correctly in his seat, now he was the one who ended the conversation.

     Toby sat with some guys during lunch instead of Sydney and her friends.

     Sydney decided that at the end of the day she would explain everything. He needed to know how she felt.

      On their way out of school she grabbed his arm against his will and led him to the parking lot and said, "Unlock your car. We're going to talk about some stuff."

     He fished for his keys and unlocked the doors and they got it. "Listen, you will not interrupt me while I'm talkin' okay? What I am about to say may change your perspective on-on everything. Me, us,...Jackson. Hopefully for the better. K?"

      He nodded in acceptance.

     She took a deep breath and started from the beginning, "I was in a relationship with Jackson as you know. We started going out in 8th grade. He-he had a very abusive mother. A terrible mother and he really had no way to explain his feelings aside from violence. Don't get me wrong, I loved him with all my heart and I still do. Just, the things he did makes me think that other guy are like that. I won't get into detail but I think you understand." Toby nodded with his full attention on Sydney. "It's not that I don't like you like that, I do, I just don't trust you. You did nothing wrong, it's me. The only reason I'm telling you this is so you know that I do care about you. Only known ya for a little while but I care about you."

     She patiently waited for an answer. He inhaled sharply, "Why do you still care about him?"

     "Because he was a great guy, just a jealous guy. It's his mother's fault!" She defended her dead boyfriend and herself.

      "You know what," He started. "Any guy whoever lays a finger on a woman, like you, has no excuse and should rot underground."

      She realized just in that moment that she cared about this guy. A lot. She felt the butterflies flying around in her stomache.

      He cared.

~~~~~
     No guy had ever cared for Sydney like that. Not even Jackson, and that was saying something.
     Things had been a little weird between them after that. They both really didn't know their feelings for one another other then they definitely cared for each other.
     But aside from texts and awkward conversations in school, they said nothing about being more then friends.
     Sydney's friends knew something was up. While Sydney was in the lunch line Kris decided to ask what was up.
      "Dude I really don't know. She told me some messed up stuff about Jackson." Toby said. Kris couldn't believe Syd had told him that. She would never tell anyone unless she had some kind of feeling for Toby.
     "She told you about that? When? Why?" Kris asked with all these questions coming to his mind.
      "After I made the moves on her and she elbowed me I was mad I'll admit it. She made me open my car and we sat and talked. She told me she did care about me. I really do like her man, I think." Toby said.
      "You think? After I told you all those things you think you like me?" Sydney said. None of them had realized she was standing there.
      Sydney stormed out of the lunch room and her friends, all but Kris, followed her.
     "Man, girls are emotional. Or is it just her? What have I gotten myself into?" Toby said putting his head down.
