"Are you ready?" A nurse, who I'd occasionally seen coming in and out of my room, asked. I sighed, and she took that as an answer.
"It's not that bad! Cheer up, you'll be in an out of there in the blink of an eye!" She spoke with that same over-hopeful tone as Ms. Baxter. I didn't believe a word she said.
After spending about an hour in an ambulance, we finally arrived at the "mental institution". The two nurses who came with me in the ambulance led me inside the hospital. One of them began talking to the secretary, obviously about me. She nodded and called someone. About a minute later a doctor, a woman, came into the lobby and took me away from the nurses. The nurses waved to me, then walked in the opposite direction.
"Hello, Taylor," the doctor says. "I am Doctor Sauer, I will be your main doctor here, but of course, like all other hospitals, there will be many other nurses and maybe even other doctors coming in to check on you. Your room is right here." She stops walking, and opens the door to a decent-sized room with a bed, a dresser adjacent to the bed, and small vanity a ways across from the bed. The sheets on the bed were nicely made, and the vanity and dresser were empty. I had a small bag filled with two shirts, two pairs of jeans, a dressy outfit, and underwear. I had no idea what I'd use the vanity for, but it had a mirror I could use.
"Well, I guess I should leave you to your unpacking then. I'll come in to check on you in a bit." With that, Doctor Sauer left. She closed the door behind her.
I sat on the edge of the bed and took out all my stuff. The silence was almost unnatural. I put away all of my clothes in the dresser. I walked over to the vanity and looked myself in the mirror. I looked just a little skinnier than before. "Must be the hospital food," I thought. I noticed a fine line that stretched diagonally across the mirror's face. I shrugged and heard a knock at the door. I walked over and opened the door. Doctor Sauer smiled and walked in.
"All settled?" She asked.
"Yeah, I guess." I responded. She sat down on the bed, and motioned me to sit next to her.
"I gave you a room by yourself, because I would not like you to associate with the people in this institution. They are extremely dangerous, and I would not want anything to happen to you." I nodded.
"So if you need anything, I have a button here for you to press if you need anything. It will notify the front desk, and someone will be sent immediately to your room." I felt a little more secure knowing that there were people looking out for me here.
Doctor Sauer got off the bed and said a quick "goodnight" and left the room. I didn't even know what time of day it was, there were no windows in my room. I turned off the light, and blindly walked to my bed. I bumped the dresser a couple of times before I found the bed. I climbed onto it, and rested my head on a cold, stiff pillow, and brought the musty comforter up to my chest. I tried to fall asleep.
