Walt Disney once said "When people laugh at Mickey Mouse, it's because he's so human; and that is the secret of his popularity. I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing-that it was all started by a mouse."

Mickey Mouse, the iconic and lovable mascot of all Disney, was first created in 1928. According to Lillian Disney and Disney Wiki Walt Disney and Mickey were almost mirrors of each other's personalities. They "both started off as mischievous and cheeky, but as they grew older preferred to step out of the spotlight and observe others work their magic."

Walt obviously did a wonderful job on this mouse whom his wife helped in naming. Mickey, originally going to be called Mortimer, has become the world's most popular cartoon.

Mickey in a nutshell

This 2 ft 3 in and 23 pound mouse has many aspects of his wondrous character. According to Disney Wiki, he is always getting himself into varying levels of trouble because of his forgetful and mischievousness, yet he is very imaginative. He uses this incredibly useful trait to pull himself out of trouble in quick thinking, smart ways. Mickey has a tendency to choose fun and games over work and is known to get into trouble with his pals, Goofy and Donald. He does have a temper, although not as severe as Donald's which has been release before.

This mouse is also loving, sympathetic and helpful. He loves Pluto more than anything and adores Minnie, as well as understanding her no matter what. No matter what cartoon or movie you watch about Mickey, he is always very brave. Whether defending Minnie from Pete or going on some other adventure, Mickey is loyal to the end and very heroic.

Mickey knows what to do when it counts. He'll work hard when he has to, help out his friends whenever they need it, and is forever optimistic.

Originally created to replace Oswald the Rabbit, Mickey was made to help Walt make up for the money lost when he was fired for asking for a larger budget for the rabbit's show. As Walt sat on a train, thinking of his lost and loved character and who would replace him, he thought of Mickey Mouse. Lillian Disney, as I mentioned earlier told him Mortimer wasn't the right name for the mouse and suggested Mickey, which obviously was taken. Mortimer would later be a rival of Mickey's.

The first cartoon was on May 15, 1928 and was called Plane Crazy.

Fun fact: Walt Disney was the first person to do Mickey's voice
