Queen Elsa was born to King Agnarr and Queen Iduna of Arendelle on the winter solstice, coincidentally.
She is 21 in the movie and is the opposite to her sister, Anna, her personality being reserved and naturally calmer and more collected.
Her magic is in the ability to create and manipulate snow and ice. As the movie unfolds, it is shown just how powerful and how fast of a learner she is, even being able to discover a variety of techniques without prior use. Her powers rely heavily on her emotions, ranging from complete control to instability.
The writers thought about Elsa's powers originating from planetary alignment, but the idea was ultimately abandoned.
She was originally written as a villain for a movie based closer to Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson, but her character was revealed to be too difficult to redeem and so was scrapped.
In addition to Frozen, Elsa also appears in Frozen Fever and Olaf's Frozen Adventure. She is voiced by Idina Menzel, Eva Bella, and Spencer Ganus.
