District 6 reapings
Kimono Starrs POV
I stand as still as a rock, watching the fish lazily swim back and forth over my feet. I clench the spear in my hand and jab it suddenly into the cluster of fish, spearing one and sending the rest scattering across the murky pond.
I pull my spear out of the water and pull the fish off the tip. It's glassy eyes stare at me in fear and I quickly end it's life, jabbing the spear into its shimmering gills.
I feel bad killing the fish, but push those thoughts into the back of my mind. How else can I feed my family?
I gut and scale the fish quickly, cleaning the white flesh and wrapping it in a damp cloth.
As I set off towards home, my mind wanders to the reaping that will take place in a couple of hours. 'You will probably get picked' my inner voice chants, 'think of all the things you have done. Going outside the boundaries. Hunting and gathering illegally. It's only your fair payback'
No, I can't get reaped. If I do, what will happen to my family? my mother depends on me to gather the plants and herbs she sells as a job, and without the food I hunt my family will die of starvation.
I enter the house, taking off my boots before stepping inside. Even though our house is basically a tumbledown shack, my mother still insists on keeping it spotless at all times.
My older brother takes my hunting bag from me silently with a nod, and begins sorting it on the kitchen bench.
"Kimmy, come upstairs" my mother calls down, "we have something to tell you"
I bound up the stairs, and am surprised to see my both my parents sitting on the edge of my bed. My father has his arm around my mothers shoulder, and she holds his other hand.
"We have something important to say" my father starts, looking me in the eye. "We are sorry for not telling you earlier Kimmy, we were just waiting for the right time" my mother continues slowly, meeting my eyes as well.
"You are going to have a baby sibling soon" I look at them in shock, and then let a wide smile spread across my face.
Logan Smiths POV
I wipe the thick layer of soot off my face, spluttering into my hand. I hate working in district 6, of all twelve districts I had to be born here.
I wish I lived in the Capitol, or even district 1 or one of the career districts. I smile, imagining myself being waited on by servants and maids.
I look up as a group of girls from school walk past. "Hey" I grin, leaning back on my elbows. They giggle and smile at me, taking in my smoke covered appearance.
I jump to my feet and walk beside them as they carry on, causing several to whisper behind their hands. "What's the big secret?" I ask, still grinning
They ignore me and continue to whisper. "Why are you all dressed up for the reaping already? there's still ages" I say, looking at their fancy dresses and freshly polished shoes.
"You do know that the reaping starts in fifteen minutes?" one of them says, laughing as I smack my hand on my forehead, accidentally smearing more dirt across my face.
"Oh shit! why didn't anyone tell me!" I gasp, turning around to run home and get changed before realising that there's not enough time.
"Damn!" I sprint off towards the town square, if I'm lucky I can at least wash my face before the reaping begins.
Stella Starlings POV
I dance across the stage, looking at the large audience of district 6. "Welcome, welcome!" I yell, stepping up to the podium, "the time has come to reap our two lucky young tributes for the 99th annual games!"
I see nervous glances being thrown around the pens. I dip my hand into the girls bowl and pull out a slip of paper with my long claw like orange nails.
"The lucky female tribute to represent district 6 is Kimono Starr!" I yell enthusiastically. "Come on up Kimono!"
A girl emerges from the crowd, she has a long glossy black plait and dark brown slanted eyes. "What age are you Kimono?" I question, "and what word would you describe yourself with?"
"I am 16 years old, and I guess the word that describes me is daring" she says simply, turning around and taking a seat. She seems very calm, staring straight ahead at the crowd.
"Time for the boys!" I declare, digging my hand into the other bowl.
"Logan Smith!" I shout happily. A boy appears from the same section as Kimono and saunters up to the stage.
I frown at him, his face is black with soot and his outfit is dirty and oiled.
"Well well, here is a rebel!" I shout, "what word describes you, Logan?"
He smiles at me and then leans towards the microphone. "Rebellious, I guess" he grins at the crowd, before taking a seat beside Kimono and beaming at her as well.
"Congratulations, here are your district 6 tributes for the games!"
Authors note: sorry if this chapter was bad! for some reason I found it hard writing about district 6, I don't know why. The next chapter will be more interesting, please comment and vote! :D
