He woke the following morning, his arms wrapped tightly around he woman he had thought about for so long. She was just as, if not more beautiful, than she was when he'd last seen her. Her skin was darker than he'd remembered it with more freckles spanning across her smooth skin. Her eyes lashes fanned her cheeks, and her hair fell in waves around her face. Lying so close to her bought back feelings he had tried so hard to forget.
She stirred and opened her eyes, blinking for a few moments before she realised who she lay so close too.
"You weren't just a dream," she smiled sleepily and he looked at her kindly, not really sure of what to say.
His fingertips ran across her forehead and gently pushed her dark hair back behind her ear. She absent mindedly ran her hand up and down his arm, before she saw the time and sighed, "It's eight o'clock, we need to get ready... I'll drive you to your hotel to pick up some fresh clothes on the way," she uttered and he pulled her closer, his hands slipping up her back,
"Connie," he uttered and when their eyes met, she knew he was the only man she had ever and would ever love. Their lips touched and she smiled against his mouth, their kisses becoming more and more desperate.
The alarm buzzing on the table beside them was an unwelcome interruption and she reluctantly pulled away from him.
"Come on," she smiled, "we need to get ready."
They arrived at the conference together and he knew that he would struggle to concentrate all day. There was so much he wanted to say, so much he wanted to know. He'd found her again and if he was honest the thought of her disappearing again would haunt him for longer than he wanted to admit.
"Can we..." He begun, before smiling at her as she nodded,
"I'm supposed to be going for a drink with the other speakers," she admitted, "will you come along?"
He raised his eyebrow, "they won't want to speak to me,"
She placed her hand on his forearm, "I want to speak to you," she told him and he nodded.
She stood in front of the large audience. It had been a while since she'd given a presentation of this size and she felt nervous. She spotted him immediately, and she felt her heart rate reduce as he winked reassuringly at her.
"I'm Connie Chase," she begun, "I've previously been a Cardio Thoracic Consultant and have been in Emergency medicine for seven years. This presentation is about the management of cardio thoracic cases in an emergency department, questions are of course welcome throughout."
He looked around at how people seemed to hang off her every word. If she was nervous, he wouldn't have known, she spoke with the same passion and conviction she'd always had.
She smiled as she saw him hesitate by the bar and walked over immediately and kissed his cheek. "I didn't think you'd show,"
"What and miss out on the chance to see my favourite girl?" He grinned and she felt familiar feelings running through her.
After one drink, she said her goodbyes and turned to Jacob,
"I have somewhere to show you," she smiled and he raised his eyebrow,
"Come with me."
She took his hand and lead him in a different direction to any sign that they had passed. He smiled and she looked up at him,
"What?"
He shrugged, "how did you find this place?"
"You know me," she smiled and he nodded, he knew her better than he knew anyone else.
She pulled a bottle of wine out of her bag and smiled as he placed his jacket on the floor.
"This view is incredible," he admitted as they looked out upon the large lake. She nodded, "I found it when I was out running... It's just that bit higher than everywhere else..."
She took off her shoes and sat down with her legs outstretched in front of her, smiling at him as he joined her.
She moved so she lay with her head on his lap, closing her eyes as his hands ran through her wavy hair, "I couldn't move on after you," he told her honestly and she opened her eyes,
"I mean I tried... I thought if I could then..." He shrugged, "but I can't,"
She sat up and crossed her legs, "I couldn't either..."
"I bet you haven't been short of offers..."
She raised her eyebrow, "I can hazard a guess that you haven't either,"
They didn't know who made the first move, but they both knew it was inevitable. She leaned up so her legs were over his and he wrapped her hair in his hand. When he finally kissed her she found herself leaning into him as she always had.
"Would it be inappropriate if I asked you to come to bed with me?" he uttered and she smiled at his choice of words,
"i though my you'd never ask," she smiled, taking his outstretched hand and squeezing it gently.
