When you haven't seen half of your "second family" in almost two years, and you have zero memory of the majority of them thanks to your super growth rates and extended vacation, a family reunion scheduled by your dad the day you arrive home from Alaska is more than awkward. It's downright ludicrous.
So here I am, sitting with my twin brother Corey in the car as my mom works on finishing her makeup, which she already didn't need. My dad has been politely encouraging my mom to finish up so we could go in and see the pack, but now, nearly six minutes later, he is growing anxious.
When she finally finishes, we all pile out of the car. As I follow my family to the door, I straighten out my light pink sweater and tug up my black leggings, biting my lip nervously. The few memories I do have of pack members who visited us in Alaska reveal fun, lighthearted wolves who treat us like family. But what if things have changed?
We are greeted almost immediately by the hoots and hollers from the pack and the delicious smell of dinner.
"Jake, Ness, you're back!" A boy, who I vaguely remember as Quil, shouts excitedly as he bounds into the room, followed by four other boys.
My mom starts laughing as another boy, Embry, I think is his name, picks her up and spins her around happily.
And then there's Corey and I, standing awkwardly in the doorway.
My dad turns around and gestures for us to step forward so we can formally be introduced to everyone, if you can even call it that. These boys are meant to be our uncles, and yet we haven't officially met most of them.
Quil Ateara is the first to engulf me in a hug, nearly breaking my ribcage in the process. "You're bigger than Claire now!" He exclaims warmly, pushing me back and grabbing me gently by my shoulders to get a better look at me. Grinning down at me impishly, his eyes bright and lively, he ruffled my hair with a chuckle.
Claire Young is Quil's best friend. The two are almost always together, even though she's technically a lot younger than him. But he's a werewolf, and age isn't really an issue with shape shifters.
Oh yeah, did I mention the majority of my family are werewolves?
Whoops.
The rest of my family makes their way over to the dinner table, and Quil leads me to a seat near him and Jared.
"So how was it, hanging out with leeches for so long?" Jared smirks, and I roll my eyes with a short laugh. Even though my mom was half vampire, which makes Corey and I part vampire as well, the boys don't seem to care.
"It wasn't to bad once you get over the smell." Corey grins. He tries to sneakily grab a roll out of the basket on the other side of the table, but Mom slaps his hand out of the way before he can. He yelps in pain and quickly darts back to his seat.
"Dumbass." I mutter under my breath. Dad, hearing from his spot a few seats down, shoots me a glare. I grin back at him sweetly, and a few seconds later he drops the expression of scolding and shakes his head, smiling softly as he turns back to his conversation with Jared about our trip to the Denali's.
You know that uneasy feeling that you get when someone is watching you while you aren't looking? Well, that feeling started to creep up on me. I glance around the entire room, but I don't find the culprit until my eyes meet with a pair of chocolate eyes from the far side of the table.
Seth Clearwater is staring at me.
"What's his problem?" I ask Quil, nudging his arm until he looks up at Seth. Immediately, Quil starts to almost choke on his roll, drawing everyone's attention from around the room as he slaps his hand on the table like a moron, his booming laughter echoing around the now silent room.
