"Ugh, that class felt like it took forever today," whined Jenna as we approached the college parking lot, her red curls bouncing with each of her steps.
" I absolutely agree. Why is it that we want to get into the medical field again?"
"Because we want our workload to kill us before old age does," replied Jenna as she chuckled. As she approached her car, she bid me a goodbye. "Oh and Laney?"
"Huh?"
"Do me a favor and keep your phone on ringer this time. I'll text you the deets about the movie."
"Alright, will do," I replied as walked past her faded orange pickup truck. "See ya later boo!"
Chuckling, she closed her door and revved up her car. As I travelled farther down the lot to get to my car, a familiar silhouette sulked his way toward the way back of the parking lot.
"Thomas! Hey Thomas!" I called, waving my right hand in the air like a maniac. After getting a few stares from students who were walking by, Thomas attempted to turn around but was covered by the giant stack of books he was carrying.
The book on the top of his pile slipped off and was followed by another and another until every individual book and notebook had made contact with the ground. Dashing to his side, I quickly helped him pick up his scattered books.
"Here, I'll help you bring this to your car," I said as I carried half the pile.
As he adjusted his glasses, he shot me a quick smile. "Ah, it makes sense that I'd drop these even when people aren't knocking them out of my hands."
Releasing a chuckle, he couldn't help but smile back. "It happens to all of us man. I'm pretty clumsy myself."
" I doubt you're as clumsy as me. I trip over the air."
"Same here, dude. Same."
Scanning the book on the top of my pile, I couldn't help but notice that he was taking Anatomy and Physiology as well. "You didn't tell me you were in anatomy and physiology! I am too!"
Curiously scanning my features, he cracked a slight smile. " I just enrolled. Today was the last day to sign up so I'm starting whenever the next class is."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I go at ten o'clock to twelve."
"Me too! We can totally work on projects together. I can help tell you what we went over already."
"Thanks, I appreciate that."
By that time, we had reached his car and he popped open the trunk. Placing down his pile, I placed mine beside him. Distracted by the music already playing in the car, I noticed that a boy was sitting in the passenger seat already.
"Please tell me that this guy doesn't bully you to drive him home."
Shaking his head, he smiled. "Nah, he's crazy but he's my friend."
"Nice."
With sincerity in his eyes, he smiled upward at me. "Thanks for helping me out again. It means a lot."
"Hey, anything for a fellow classmate," I replied as I playfully jabbed him in the side with my elbow.
Turning his head toward our conversation, the boy in the passenger seat looked at us from the front of his truck. "Tom, you're letting the air out of the car. Oh and who's your-ohmypixiedust," he said stopping in his tracks.
Ohmypixiedust was right. Definitely right. Absolutely right.
Because staring back at me was a man who looked a bit different than the boy I once knew and yet he was still the same.
Peter Pan, you've come back for me.
