The machine Pax and Rubin were in had been moving for a few hours now, and they had not seen one sign of a new forest yet. All around was flashing lights, concrete roads, and plenty other machines. The only trees were the occasional one in a yard or business. The rest was artificial all the way through. In other words, unsuitable for a fox. Rubin watched Pax scan the land for possible homes, and he had not mentioned anything. Rubin began to worry. What if we never find one? She thought. The machine began to slow down. Pax turned to her suddenly. His eyes were black.
"Let's get off this thing," He told her. She nodded, eyes the same. The machine stopped, and they jumped out the back. They ran to a small store and his behind it.
"I'll go in and snag something," He told her.
"Be careful!" She pleaded, and kissed his cheek. His eyes pulsed pink, and he snuck in. Luckily, the counter was in the far corner, so he wasn't spotted, though the cashier did turn his way when the door opened. She shrugged and pocketed some money from the register. Pax picked up a warm bottle of water, and sausages from the breakfast table. Again the lady looked his way when he exited. "What the-" Pax went back around Rubin was licking a small cut.
"You alright?" He asked. Rubin nodded. "I'm fine. Just a little hungry." Pax nudged her a sausage. Rubin sniffed it and began to salivate. She took a bite. "Woah!" She yelled. Pax jumped up.
"What's wrong?" He asked quickly. She looked up at him. "It- Its amazing! You've got to try it!" She exclaimed. Pax looked down at his, and also smelled it. Mmmmmn. He took a bite. His eyes burst orange. It was the most delicious taste ever. So warm and meaty. Rubin had already finished hers, and had bit open the bottle. She was lapping it up. Pax finished his and drunk the other half. Ahhh. That's better. Rubin looked much happier.

They walked around the city, avoiding machines and humans. What now? Pax wondered. Rubin had no I dear where to go. They had never known anything but their forest, and it was gone forever.
"We need to find another one" Pax said to her. She nodded, and they started their search. Of course to get anywhere quickly, they must travel in a new truck. Many fly by on the highway they walk along, all too fast to jump on. But what's this? A truck on the side! Not even moving yet. Score! So Pax and Rubin crawled in the back. The car jerked with their weight.
"What the fuck?" They heard someone yell. The truck shook a lot more, a door opened, and a human jumped out with something. He jumped back at the sight of them.
"Get the hell off my truck!" He yelled, but as Rubin and Pax are foxes, they did not understand. The man raised his arm with an object. Pax looked at Rubin.
"What's in his-" BAM! The man shot at them, and a hole appeared were Pax had turned. Pax snapped his head back at him. His eyes glowed like fire.
"Woah!" The man screamed. Pax leaped at him, but Rubin bit his tail, (Pax No!) and drug him towards the small patch of trees. Soon Pax just kept pace himself, and turned back to see the man, still there, clutching his heart.

Pax rested in those trees with Rubin. She was worried about how Pax will react to others. But he was arguing back he could control it.
"Rubin, that was a while ago! I can keep myself in check!" Rubin looked away.
"I saw what you did before, dude, and I can't just not worry about it." Pax frowned. I can control it, He thought.
"Alright," He told her," I promise to keep my cool, okay? But it was totally justified back there!" Rubin closed her eyes and sighed. She could tell he'll try.
"Thank you." Pax's ears perked up and his eyes went black.
"What was that?" Rubin pushed him. "I said thanks! Jeez, you don't have to-" A rustle in the bushes nearby was very loud. Rubin backed up into Pax, and her eyes grew black. What is it? She thought. The rustling grew louder. Pax growled. Something jumped out!
