Night has fallen quickly. It is already eleven and the darkness of the rainy night envelopes me. The only light around is from the flickering street lights and the dim light of the moon. I pulled my hoodie tighter around me so I could cover most of my black strapless dress from the rain. The street is filled with puddles that I'm careful not to step in. I speed up my pace as I cross the street.
"I can't be late. Who knows what crazy consequences that foul man has for me if I'm late." I think to myself.
As I keep walking, I see a couple wandering down the road ahead of me. They talk loudly and the woman lets out a loud laugh. They make me uncomfortable. Who knows what they could do? I inhale and then exhale again slowly, trying to calm myself of my nervousness. The distraction has kept me from watching where I was walking, and I trip over a crack in the sidewalk and land in a large puddle.
"Great. Just what I fucking need," I mutter angrily, standing up and trying to wipe the water off of my legs,"Stupid heels."
I rub the scratches where I fell on my hands.
I shake my head at my black shoes, removing them from my feet. As I set my feet back down in the puddle I can feel the cold slimy water on the bottoms of my feet and all in between my toes. Once I set foot on the freezing concrete of the damp sidewalk I do a sort of dance, trying to warm up my feet, but it's useless; the rain continues to fall and my body continues to shiver.
Everyone around looks at me like I'm an idiot, covered in water, dancing away the chill of the air. I stop immediately, embarrassed at how foolish I must look. I clear my throat, pulling down my back dress and then turning left into a dark alley. The visibility back here is worse than before, and it has this creepy feeling to it. I begin to feel uneasy at this place a tiny shiver runs down my spine.
"There you are." A voice calls out from in front of me. As I move closer I can just make out the shadow of a slim figure leaning against the brick building. "I was starting to think that you wouldn't come."
"I wouldn't do that to you, Jim. After all, you are my boss," I reply, letting out a shaky laugh.
He nods. "Did I scare you Asriel?" Jim asks.
I shrug in response. Jim's miscreant green eyes lock onto mine as if he is trying to read my mind. Swiftly, I turn my head in the other direction and glance back at the entrance of the alley. "So what did you want me here for?" I inquire, in an attempt to change the subject.
"I have a mission for you." He answers.
"And that is?" I question, raising an eyebrow at him.
"You'll go to a small town called Hillagain to babysit children."
"That's it? You want me to babysit children? " I snicker a bit, thinking to myself, That's the best you've got?
"There's another part to it, stupid." Jim narrows his eyes at me and explains. I look at his lips as he explains the other part of what exactly he wanted. My eyes widen in horror when he finishes.
"You have got to be kidding me!"
"Well I'm not. You're eighteen years old." He says, then changes his voice to mimic a child. "I think you can handle this."
"B-b-but," I stutter. "But, I can't do that. It's wrong!"
"I need my revenge."
"So?"
"So, it's a big deal."
"Why can't you do it yourself or get someone else to do it?"
"No. You're the only one able to do this job out of the other workers." He pauses, "Those kids parents went around killing people in my neighborhood for drugs and money. They killed my family because of it. I was hiding under my bed, wishing that it wasn't happening, but sadly it was. They didn't know I was there. I saw all of it, everything. From the pleading to the killing to the get away. It was horrific and gruesome to watch. I swore I'd get my revenge on all of them and you, Asriel, are here to help me. They took away something I loved and nothing could ever replace it, so now I'm taking away the thing that they love the most."
"If it hurt you so much, why would you make others hurt as well?" I reason.
"That's your assignment," He says as he switches the topic, "And you'd better do as I say. Otherwise you'll be sorry," Jim states, firmly as a grin grows on his slim face.
"Whatever." I spit the word out as if it is a bitter taste in my mouth, turning and stomping away angrily.
"Hey, remember, it's you who needs the money, not me. Good luck. Oh and I'll be watching you!" Jim yells out. I wave my hand, dismissively.
Stepping onto the sidewalk I let out a small sigh as I make the long walk back to where I came from. The road is empty as I travel in the middle of it shaking my head. I enter the apartment that I was staying in for the time being. Everything is well lit but it's empty except for one worker who has fallen asleep at his post.
I walk over towards the elevator and push the button to go up to the fourth floor. Taking my card out I slide it through the door of my room and step into my cheap apartment room. I throw my wet clothes on the floor and put on my pajamas. Then without a single thought, I fall into bed and immediately close my eyes and drift into a dreamless sleep.
