Chapter 10
I'm grabbing my stuff from my locker when Jess comes up from behind me.
"Hey girl!"
"Hey Jess."
"Listen we need to talk. Are you ok? You've seemed a bit off today." Should I tell her the truth?
"No, I'm not ok. Yesterday I found out my dad has cancer." She gasps and her eyes soften.
"Oh my god Rachel I'm so sorry. I-I don't know what to say. What can I do?"
"Just be my friend. Just be normal around me ok. Be the bright girl you are and light up the mood ok?" I've decided to not mourn over about the news but instead be happy. I know it sounds weird but I don't want my dad or anyone to see me hurt, I want him to see me as his strong happy little girl and I'm going to do just that. Our whole family has decided to not be sad but instead be positive in any way we can. It won't help my dad if we are all depressed. I want the rest of his life to be filled with joy. We decided to not mourn until he passes away, which will hopefully still be a long long time from now.
"I can do that!" She says with a smile.
"So how are you and Brian?" She says. I'm grateful she changed the topic and is acting like everything's ok.
"I don't know. Jess, I really really like him, I might even be in love with him." Her eyes widen and she gasps very loudly.
"OMG! Yay! Finally you've said it."
"Was it that obvious?" I ask.
"Very, very obvious. But that's ok, it's obvious that Brian feels the same way." I almost choke on my breath.
"Yeah um no way."
"Rachel believe me ok? He likes you, just tell him how you feel."
"Jess, that's crazy!"
"No it's not. What have you got to lose? Your friendship. It wasn't a real friendship if he ditches you just cause you catch feelings for him."
"Yeah but, I know he doesn't like me that way, our friendship will be awkward."
"Rachel, you of all people should know that sometimes you don't have as much time with a person as you think and you should also know that you could get told something completely unexpected." Well I thought she was going to act like everything was normal. She is right though.
"I know but-"
"No buts, just tell him ok? You need a little bit of happiness in your life right now and I now that Brian makes you happier than anyone. So man up and tell him!" Should I tell him? What's the worst that can happen? He won't like me back? Oh wait! What about mystery girl, I completely forgot about that.
"Jess I can't." She groans.
"Ughhhh. Why not?"
"Because of mystery girl!"
"Rachel, did you ever stop to think that maybe you are mystery girl?" My heart stops. To tell you the truth I never did think I was her. Maybe I am though, I mean he has been wanting to hang out more often and he hasn't talked about anyone else. Also he does complement me a lot. Could I really be mystery girl? No way.
"Go get him tiger." Jess says and shoves me into the right direction of the exit. Here goes nothing. I walk out the door and breathe in the fresh air. I told Brian to wait for me just right around the corner. I turn the corner and my heart drops. I see Anya and Brian making out. They stop shortly after and Brian turns around and sees me staring. I turn around and run.
"Rachel! Rachel wait!" I hear Brian yelling for me. I run faster. Brian is in football so he catches up to me quickly and grabs my arm.
"Let go of me." I yell. He drops his hand from my arm.
"Rachel, please just listen to me ok?"
"No, I don't need to listen to you. It's fine. You like Anya I don't care." I lie.
"Rachel listen-"
"You don't have to explain ok? It's fine, we are just friends it's not like you have to get my approval to date someone." His face turns to anger.
"Yeah, your right. We are just friends. I knew you hated her so I wanted to explain but I guess it doesn't matter. Like you said, I don't need your approval."
"Ok then. Great talk, see you around Brian. Have a nice life with your girlfriend."
"I will."
"Fine."
"Fine."
We look in each other's eyes for a long time. Finally I look away. I could tell by the way he looked at me that he was definitely not going to see me around.
"It's better this way." I mumble.
"What did you say?" Brian asks.
"Nothing, forget it. See you around Brian, wouldn't want to get in the way of your relationship so I'll keep my distance." I'm completely fine with that though.
"Fine whatever Rachel, be that way." He turns around and walks away. As soon as he's out of sight I let a tear fall. How could I be so stupid? Of course mystery girl was Anya, she's perfect. I can't believe I thought he might actually like me back.
~~
"That doesn't make sense though why would he break up with her just to get back with her? I don't think she's mystery girl." Jess says. I just got done telling her what happened with me and Brian on the phone.
"She is mystery girl trust me. They were making out hardcore. He was probably just confused about his feelings and needed a break to clear his head and think."
"Yeah I guess so." Jess says not sounding so sure.
"Well I got to go. I'm gonna go hang out with my dad. See you tomorrow."
"Ok, bye girly." I hang up and put my phone to charge. I walk downstairs and see my dad sitting on the couch, he's been doing that a lot now. I sit next to him.
"Hey baby girl. How are you?"
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" I say. He chuckles.
"I've already told you, I'm fine, really."
"Really?" I ask.
"Really really." My dad says with a genuine smile.
"So what's bothering you?" My dad asks me. Other than the fact you have cancer? I tell him all about Brian and he nods his head the whole time.
"Well darling, I've met Brian and let me tell you. I can read people and he's not the type of guy to go for a girl like that. Your an amazing young lady and you just need to give him time to realize that. And you know what? If he never does than its his loss, don't let a boy affect you so much sweetheart. Enjoy your young years and stay away from the trouble and heartbreak." I smile. I love talking to my dad, he gives me the best advice. I nod my head and give him a hug. My dads not gone yet, so I'm not going to act like he is.
