"Oh, um, Auggie." I stuttered. "This isn't momm-"

"Yes it is." he said. "I saw you pull it out." He stepped down the stairs and walked to me. He then snatched the dollar from me.

"Hey, Auggie!" I whisper-shouted.

"I'm giving this to mommy." he started to walk away put I lifted him up and took the money back.

"You can't tell her." I said. "I need this money, Auggie."

"For what?" he asked.

"I need to buy something. Something, for mommy." I lied.

"So you're going to buy something for mommy, with mommy's money?"

"Yeah. You did that, remember?"

"Well yeah but Mommy said that when I am your age I won't have to do that anymore."

"Sometimes we do, now go back to sleep."

"Ok." he turned around and walked away. I sighed and closed my mother's wallet. I stared at the dollar covered in lies and felt my eyes sting a little bit. How could I lie to my best friend? To Auggie? To my parents? I then wiped them and grabbed my phone.

I then slipped on my slippers and grabbed my raincoat. It was the first day of April, and April showers could be here now. It was weird to think that in four days, I would be pregnant for 2 weeks.

I opened the window door and crawled out. It was like my bay window, but in the living room. I stood on the balcony and looked out into the city. The lights of the late night buildings twinkled in the darkness.

I knew Maya was awake. She was always awake.

As I walked down the balcony stairs and I called Maya.

"Riley?" she whispered. Her voice sounded croaky like she was sick.

"Maya? Are you sick?" I asked, reaching the streets of New York City.

"Yes, Riley, but I'll be able to go to school."

"What are you sick with, I'll get you medicine?" The rain fell slowly that early April morning. My stomach rumbled as I smelled brownies from a nearby condo. Who would be making brownies at this hour?

"Just stay in your warm bed."

"I'm already outside, heading to the gas station. What do you need?"

"I have the common cold. Get whatever you like. Why are you heading to the gas station 3:30?"

"Oh, I couldn't sleep."

"OK. I'll see you in a few minutes."

"Are you still mad at me, Maya?" she all of the sudden went silent and the only sounds coming from the phone were Maya coughing and her mother crying in her room. I wasn't sure why Katy was crying, but I didn't want to bring it up now.

"I'll see you in a few minutes." I hung up and stepped inside of the gas station.

James sat at the gas station desk, his face laid across the table. The little ding the door made woke him up and he looked up at me.

"Early morning, Riley?" he asked. He didn't forget my name.

"Well, I couldn't sleep." I said. "I decided to take another test or two." he nodded as I made my way to the familiar aisle. I grabbed the two boxes, paid and went into the small, smelly bathroom.

*20 minutes later*

The first test:

Pregnant

1-2 babies

The second test:

+

It's official. I was pregnant and had 1-2 babies inside of me. I sighed and stared at myself in the mirror. Should I tell Maya when I get to her house?

No. I need to tell my parents first. The father knows, next is my parents.

I grabbed some common cold medicine, paid for it and left the gas station again. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called another person.

"Riley? What are you doing up?" Farkle asked me.

"I took two more tests. I either have 1 or 2 babies." I said. "You better not have told your parents."

"I didn't." he said. "But we have to at some point."

"Not now. I'll tell you when I tell mine." I said. "We should also set up a doctor's appointment soon."

"Ok. I'm on it."

"See you later Farkle." I turned off my phone and walked to Maya's small apartment.

I didn't want to knock, in case Katy was asleep, so I texted Maya to tell her I was at the door. I sat down on her porch and looked at the homeless people laying on the streets with signs next to them. I had spent all my money that night but if I had some I would've given it to them.

I would never want that for anybody.

The door opened and I stood up and stared at Maya.

"Peaches." I whispered. I handed her the cold medicine.

"Thanks, honey." I stepped inside of her house and I grabbed my best friend. We hugged for 2 minutes and then we let go, smiling at each other. Maya's eyes sparkled wet like mine. I then shut the door and took out my messy bun.

"Are you hungry?" she asked. "We can have some cereal."

"Yeah, sure." I said. We walked into her kitchen and I sat at the tabletop and she poured me a sugary bowl of goodness. We sat and eat until about 4:00.

"2 more months of eighth grade!" Maya exclaimed, putting our bowls in the dish washer. I laughed.

"I see you're excited for the summer." I awkwardly said.

"Yeah, of course." she said. "You know who isn't? Lucas and Smackle." My heart sunk.

"If you're here to make me feel bad then I can just leave!" I all of the sudden shouted. Her smile wiped away. She didn't respond.

"I'm, I'm sorry Maya."

"What's wrong Riley?"

"I can't tell you." she seemed like I slapped her. She stood up, walked to the door and opened it.

"I need to sleep." she lied. I stood up and left, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders.

As I walked up the balcony stairs I remembered all the things I did that made me feel bad. I kissed Farkle, yelled at Maya, got pregnant.

I crawled into the window and shut it. I realized how cold and wet I was as Maya's house and the gas station was already cold. I took my coat off and hung it on the coat rack. My wet slippers laid next to the rainboots and I walked towards my mom's wallet. I felt so horrible and I knew if I stood there any longer I was going to cry.

So, I grabbed my phone and walked into my bedroom, falling asleep, feeling so gulity.
