Chapter 2: A New Friend

When I wake up, Luke is already getting breakfast ready. Today is the day, I thought while trying not to yawn too much and say, "Why the Hell are you up so early?" It's barely daybreak and he always wakes up last.

"Today is the day you meet Liam, so I figured I should look my best." Those words reminded me of when my father used to put on a suit every time he left the house. He always wanted to look his best.

Those were the last words he ever spoke to me. He had the audacity to say he wanted to look his best when my face was splattered with his blood. I remember the scent of his blood and gasp, though quietly enough as to where Luke does not notice. They say the strongest harbingers of memory come from scents, and since blood is not uncommon in the apocalypse, I am reminded of his death often. Matthew, the werewolf who ate my parents' hearts, is still alive. It is a personal goal of mine to kill him myself, though I would never tell Luke that.

"So he finally has a name, this mysterious friend of yours," I say after I stand up. He has been talking about him for weeks, yet has never said his name. Though, he did tell me how they met. Five years ago, when most of humanity was in the grave or worse, Luke said that there was a time when I got food poisoning from some cans we got from an abandoned grocery store. There wasn't much, so Luke let me eat all of it. And of course, It happened to all be bad. We were with a group of women who stayed alive because they were in an "Anti-Molestation Self Defense Group," as they called it, and they had been able to break into the local Police station about a week after their leader, Christine, was possessed and killed 5 of their own.

Luke went out to find some medicine and left me in the care of the women. Most of them were stay at home moms before it all went down, so they were happy to take care of a child. While Luke was out, he was doing well in his journey when this huge nest of vampires suddenly surrounds him. He says there were like 30 of them, but everyone knows vampires don't travel in nests larger than 10-15 so I think he was just being a wimp.

Anyway, Luke was just about to get his throat ripped out by a massive one, he thinks was the leader, but this random scrawny kid jumps out of a bush and chops the vamp's head clean off. The others got the message quick, but even while they were running, the kid managed to kill three more. He walked up to Luke and said some obscure literary reference that totally gave him a nerd-boner, and they were immediately best friends. Adorable, except for the fact that they were both covered in blood and now an angry vampire's nest knows their scent. But, yeah, super adorable.

The scrawny kid from the story now has a name, Liam. Luke never told me why Liam couldn't tag along with us, but I think he was pushed away from the idea of taking care of a kid, especially in today's world.

"Yes, well, time to get a move on. We should be there by lunch." And with that, we started walking. I still couldn't imagine dealing with a guy just as nerdy as Luke, but like I said before, only the bloody battles.

True to his word, Luke showed me to the front door just as the sun peaked in the desolate, apocalyptic sky. There were lights on in the house, so he must be good with a generator. A good sign, I think. I knock on the door as Luke instructs. A password is smart. It keeps the shifters away. I must've correctly knocked, because I was rewarded by a clean, yet messy face smiling down at me. It was Liam, not at all like Luke described him, but it was him.

"Hello! So great to finally see you again!" Liam says to Luke, and I can sense something strange in his words. Not malice, but rather fierce kindness. His smile gives away the same feeling, but Luke trusts him, so we enter his home anyway.
