CHAPTER ONE: Piper Had a Problem.

HER FOOT TAPPED restlessly against the faded blue tiles, while she fiddled around with her fingers on her lap.

It has been exactly four minutes since Piper first sat down on one of the two chairs outside the principal's office. In that time, she drowned in her own nervous thoughts and calculated every possible consequence of the dreaded meeting.

What if they call my parents? What if they kick me out of the school? What if they kick me out of the town? What if they literally kick me? What if they--

Footsteps interrupted her thoughts, and caused her to turn her head to the direction of the noise. She found herself watching a tall, muscular boy forcedly take the seat next to her.

His left cheek was bruised purple, while he was sporting a blackened right eye. He briefly gave Piper a sideways glance before sitting down with a light groan.

Piper shifted her body to face him, and asked with widened eyes, "How did you get that?"

The boy, Everest, was taken aback. He looked around to see if she was actually talking him or someone else. Doesn't she know who I am?

When he realized that her question was directed at him, Everest asked with furrowed eyebrows, "Excuse me?"

"Your bruises. Did someone beat you up?"

Piper really had no filter sometimes--though she never meant to offend anyone.

But Everest was definitely offended. He is Everest fucking Leighton, for crying out loud! If he looked bad right there, then they should see what he did to the other guy. Poor soul must be crawling to the hospital.

His eyes narrowed sharply at the curious girl in front of him, sarcastically brushing her off, "No, I gave myself a beating. Wanted a new look." Everest gestured to the purpled skin on his face, and then dismissively rolled his eyes.

If possible, Piper's eyes widened even more and she gasped. With a hushed tone, she questioned, "Seriously?"

Everest scrunched his nose at her, and thought in disbelief, this girl has got to be fucking kidding, right? He gave her an expression to make her feel as if she was stupid, but of course Piper is immune to such things. She took his disgusted expression as an assertive yes.

Before he could even reply with a potentially rude comment, the principal's door flew open. A young girl came out wiping her tears and had expensive mascara running down her face.

Everest knew her--pretty well, if you know what I mean--and he knew those tears were fake. The girl, Bailey, was probably caught sucking someone's face and she used some lame backstory on the principal. Although, judging by the principal's (Mrs. Hawthorne) victorious face, Bailey didn't put up that good of a show--or she paid her pretty well to avoid any punishment.

While walking past Everest, she gave him a sly wink to which he only smirked at before he looked away. When Piper saw Bailey, she immediately frowned because she couldn't help but imagining herself to be walking out that door just completely sobbing.

"Piper Leele?" The middle-aged lady asked, "Come in." She disappeared from the doorway and left Piper to shakily get up and make her way in there.
