Dawn

Out of the bushes slipped five lean wolves. I noticed that only the black wolf held his tail high, did he not have a mate? It was spring so under a rock was a little shallow den. Small little yips of excitement came from inside, and a lean white wolf slunk out eyeing me, and baring her teeth. the other wolves stepped back and crouched low to the ground when they saw her reaction. I took a step back and tried to look as nonthreatening as possible.

But she didn’t back off, but just stepped closer. The black wolf growled at her warningly, but she just snapped at him instead and advanced on me. Terror was flaming up inside me. The white wolf leaped, I braced for when her teeth would sink into my arm of elsewhere, but instead the black wolf, ‘my’ wolf, had intercepted her. They wrestled on the ground for a moment before ‘my’ wolf stood over her, teeth bared, and the white wolf crouched on the ground in submission. My eyes widened, wow he just attacked her to protect me! He took a step back to let her up.

As she slunk back to her pups, he snapped at her side. the rest of the pack eyed me and went about their buissness as if my being there was normal. Although every so often one of them would come up and sniff my clothing nervously. I sunk to the ground wearily, and took a deep breath. I was no longer afraid because I knew that the black wolf would protect me. I smiled and leaned back against a birch tree.

“hey dad! I’m back! we can go hunting now!”

I called as i walk through my front door.

“Not now son,” he said as he was rushing out the door, “got an emergency at work.”

“Okay.” i said, while added in my head, nice seeing you.

But inside I was quite relieved that I wouldn’t have to keep my dad from shooting the wolves. I brought my bag upstairs, and took out all my textbooks, and duct-taped the binding on my science book.

I finished my homework and stuffed all back in my torn backpack. Now before dad gets home there is something i need to do, i thought as I ran for the woods.

Dawn

I sat with the wolves for quite a while taking pictures, and every so often the white wolf would glance at me and bare her teeth, but every time ‘my’ wolf would growl at her. I was reviewing the photos I took when soft fur rubbed up against my elbow and I jumped. I looked down and chewing on my shoelace was a small, silver wolf pup. i chuckled and glanced at it’s mother, who just looked at me nervously. I smiled and ran my fingers over the pups back.

He rolled over, just like a regular puppy, begging for his stomach to be rubbed. then I was tackled by all the pups, all four of them. The silver male leaped on my arm and the two white females climbed on my legs, an the solid gray male climbed all over my stomach. I looked over at the white wolf to see how she was taking this, she was laying on her side probably relieved not to have them all over her at the moment, but she did keep and eye on me. Her eye seemed to have an amused glint to them.

After the pups had gone back to their mother a loud, heartbreaking screech came from the woods nearby. None of the wolves paid any attention to it, the biggest reaction was a flick of a smaller gray wolf’s ear. The screech didn’t sound human, nor did it sound like an animal, but I didn’t get to worry about it long because a crack of a stick made me jump. But it was just a gray-brown wolf. Just showing himself now, he gave me a look and whined, ‘my’ wolf stood and softly growled in response. I studied the wolf while he studied me there was something that seemed recognizable about him; his eyes. His eyes were a dark gray color.

My mind suddenly raced to connect everything. Screech…. a new wolf…. seemed confused by my presence (although why wouldn’t he be?), and the fimliar eyes....my brain scrambled to put everything together. Then everything peiced together, no I couldn’t be right! Could I?
