I couldn't believe mom started crying today. We were at the park with Kenny since she was bored. Kenny was going down the slide when mom began to cry. "Mom what's wrong" I asked her.
Mom sniffled and grabbed my hand in hers. "Life isn't fair Katie" She whispered. I closed my eyes letting her voice sink in. Mom reached up to par down her brown hair that held little gray in it.
Kenny giggled and waved at us as she climbed the latter to go down the swing again. "Mom how is life not fair" I asked leaning on her. "It's taking you away from your family"
I felt my body go weak. She never had these conversations with me. She didnt even want to help me plan my Funeral. "Mom" I whisper touching her cheek. Kenny squealed as she tried to run up the slide.
"Mom" I repeated again. She turned to look at me. Never did I notice that black bags under her eyes. She stayed up many nights crying or praying to God asking for another way to save me that she failed to take care of herself.
"It is the circle of life" I gave her lightly squeezing her hand. Her body stance slumped forward a little causing me to wince. "The circle of life is the most delicate thing ever made". Kenny began to chase a butterfly around the park.
"It's also heart breaking to" Mom said pulling her legs onto the bench. "How do you think I will be when your gone..how Kenny will feel" Mom asked pushing a brown curl behind her ear. "Kenny will be fine mom and so will you" I say feeling like I'm giving her a pep talk.
Mom nodded and said it was time to go. This was the longest conversation we ever had about my Death. I got the sudden feeling we were being watched. I spun in my heels and saw a fiugure dressed in navy green dart behind a tree.
I stared at the figure blending in with the tree. "Mom take Kenny to the car please" I asked her already moving towards the figure. Mom nodded and took hold of Kenny's hand. "I'll come back around for you Katie" She said.
I gave her a thumbs up to show her that I was listening. The park was empty but I never saw a other car in the parking lot or even a bike. I could hear Kenny giggling at something mom said. I couldn't help but smile.
I was a few feet away from the tree when I heard rustling in the bushes. I turned so quick nearly getting whiplashed. "Who's there" I called out getting into a defensive position. Not a sound was to be heard again. I walked over to the Bush momentarily forgetting about the tree.
I slowly walked over to the bush then without warning a small bunny hopped out . The thing was it was a dark green and had a dark yellow nose. I gasped at the sight of the beautiful rabbit. It hopped away but before it got out of my eyesight it turned back to look at me.
In the distance I could hear a car honk signaling that Mom was already there. I backed away from the Bush and turned around to walk away when something jumped from the tree onto another. I nearly screamed when I didn't see where it went.
So I ran. I ran for my life. But the image of the navy green bunny and the weird figure dressed in green would never be far from my mind.
