It was Keith's birthday. Knowing Keith hated his birthday, Lance took him to see the stars.
The wind was blowing through their hair, but it wasn't cold.
It was dark, but not too dark where they couldn't see anything. The street lights just below them illuminated the space just right. There were random piles of dirt, and the concrete walls were cracking, peeling, and scratched, but neither of them didn't mind. They were sitting on a weird bar that was slightly uncomfortable, but there was no other place to sit other than the dirty floor. It didn't matter though, Keith was too enthralled by the night sky and the stars. He loved the way the universe worked.
"Happy birthday." Lance said quietly.
"Yeah." Keith mumbled, still distracted by the full moon. He wondered if Lance knew it was going to be a full moon.
"Did you make a birthday wish?"
"That's childish." Keith chuckled, but Lance didn't laugh. He narrowed his eyes towards him, "You're serious."
"Very."
"Okay fine. I wish-"
"No! You can't say it out loud or it won't come true." Keith rolled his eyes but made a wish anyway. There was a brief pause before Lance said something again, "What'd you wish for?"
"Really?" Keith barked.
"Just kidding." Lance laughed. "Do you like it?"
"Like what?"
"The sky, obviously."
Keith smiled, but unnoticeable to Lance, "Yeah. It's... Relaxing."
But Keith's slight ease was shattered when he felt a weird sadness overcome him. He was having a bad day. He's had bad days, but never like this, and especially never in front of anyone. He was always the strong one, it was his job. He could never show that he was hurting in the chance that other people might see that too. But god, today was different. He felt his throat burn, and his eyes form beads of tears he refused to let fall, and the pent up repressed feelings he hid from everyone. But he knew why he felt like this.
It was because he hated his birthday; the day he was brought to life.
It was because he repressed his feelings so well that he didn't even know he was feeling them; how he always had to be the 'bigger person'.
It was because he started to remember the nightmares about the days in the orphanage; the feeling of being abandoned and unloved.
It was because he was with the person he cared for the most; he learned that Lance was a drug. He knew that he didn't need him to live, but he needed him to survive.
Out of the blue, he started screaming at the top of his lungs; all the anger, the stress, the worry. Everything was poured out into his cry for help, until he couldn't scream anymore, and instead, silently wept under the midnight sky. It took a few seconds, but he wiped his tears away, took a deep breath, and mumbled an apology.
"Forget about that, okay? It's our secret." He murmured, barely audible, but Lance heard him.
Lance didn't say anything, but he cautiously placed his hands on top of Keith's resting ones. He expected Keith to hit him, or move his hand away, but he didn't. He felt his chest tighten, feeling like he had to do this now or he never would be able to. He got up, letting the warmth of Keith's hands go. Keith watched him walk away, wondering what he was up to until his heart nearly stopped when he saw him climb over the safety fence and onto the edge of the roof.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" He immediately got up, running towards him as tears tickled his cheek, unable to control it this time.
"Keep this a secret too, okay?" Lance only smiled before looking forward, and down to the sidewalk 100 feet below him.
Keith's heart pounded through his chest, his hands clammy and he waited impatiently, wanting for Lance to come down, wondering what stupid thing he was up to this time. "Lance... Get down, I'm begging you." He was sobbing now, something he never wanted to show anyone. When he didn't move, Keith stepped forward and he tugged at Lance's jacket, pleading for him to come down, but then he said something that threw Keith off.
"I love you."
Lance jumped down, grinning from ear to ear and waited for Keith to hit him or hurt him; he didn't care. And as expected, Keith's face morphed into anger and he angrily grabbed the collar of his shirt, but instead of punching him like Lance expected, he brought him closer and wrapped his arms tightly around his small, skinny torso.
Lance's eyes opened wide in shock. He didn't expect Keith to hug him, but he found himself putting his arms around him too, and squeezing so tight he thought Keith would comment about not being able to breathe, but he didn't. They stayed like that for what seemed like eternity, until Keith finally let go, and did the unthinkable.
His lips pressed into Lance's soft ones, and as much as Keith wanted to say it was wrong, it felt so right.
"You're right." Keith pulled away.
"About what?"
"I'm glad I didn't say my wish out loud otherwise it wouldn't have come true."
"...This was your wish?" Keith never saw Lance act so serious.
"Believe it or not, yeah." A small laugh left his lips. "I thought this was stupid and childish, but... Who would have thought?"
"I'm confused. Does this mean-"
"Yeah." Lance didn't even have to finish his sentence for Keith to know what he was talking about. "I love you too, idiot."
