[College AU]
It was a quiet, stormy afternoon. The main lights in the house were cut off, so Keith went ahead and lit candles around the small dorm room. Candles were banned in the dorms, but since when did Keith follow the rules?
There were occasional bursts of lightning illuminating through the blinds and the loud thunder following after. There were also small muffled voices from the movie that was playing on Keith's laptop that filled the room. The movie, however, wasn't important. Keith didn't even remember what he had put on because he was more focused on the lump of a boy that laid on the bed across from him, asleep.
Lance.
Keith's supposed rival, arch nemesis, and dorm mate.
Stubborn.
Lance was one of the most stubborn person he's met and someone who never gives up or backs down even if he knows it's easier to do so. This trait along with his passion for astrology and space and all the things around him that kept him late at night, studying until dawn, and sleeping during the day. Lance was someone Keith wanted to be, but never could. More importantly, though, Keith wanted to be with him.
Keith sat back on the bed, bringing a warm coffee mug to his lips as he took a sip. He brought the blankets up to his and made himself comfortable as he tried to focus on whatever shitty movie he set himself to watch, but then again, he couldn't. His eyes kept shifting back to Lance. It was a little creepy watching someone sleep, but Keith meant it in the most innocent way.
For some reason, Lance looked more beautiful than Keith remembered. He even caught himself smile and didn't even realize when he said out loud, "I wish you knew how much I actually love you."

Lance woke up a few hours later with a dazed look. He sat up and faced his wall before lazily turning around and immediately frowning when he saw Keith before shoving his face back into the pillow for a brief moment.
"You're weird." Lance mumbled before lifting his head back up and facing Keith.
"What are you talking about?" Keith asked, trying to sound annoyed, but he suddenly thought of what he had said earlier and his heart started to pound.
"I had a dream about you," Lance said in a gravely voice, rubbing his eyes and yawning.
"You what?" Keith replied almost dazed from what Lance said, his heart beating faster than before.
"It was about you. You told me you loved me." he explained. Keith deadpanned for a few seconds before recovering himself.
"Like, in a brother way?" He asked nervously.
"Like, in a romantic way," Lance glanced over at him and smiled slightly. "Gross, right?"
Keith could feel his heart break in his chest. His 'accidental' confession being rejected, even though Lance thought it was just a dream, it still hurt knowing he didn't like him in that way. Keith plastered a fake smile on his face and forced a small laugh.
"More than gross." he agreed, shifting away from him slightly.
"Imagine us together," Lance laughed.
"I'm actually going to ask to switch roommates," Keith shook his head, hiding the fact that his heart ached more and more.
Unbeknownst to him, though, Lance was lying too. And just like Keith's, he felt his heart break as well when Keith thought his dream was weird. Keith's 'rejection' to his 'confession' damaging him more than he thought. One day he might tell him his true feelings properly, but for now, he'll continue to be the best rival and pretend to be happy when he wins at games, studies, or whatever is they are competing about. The both of them living in an unneeded state of grief of 'one-sided' love; when in reality, the love is secretly returned unrequited.
